LIVE Daytona Thursday Blog

By Greg Engle
Cup Scene Daily,February 16

-8:40AMGetting ready to head to the Happiest Place on Earth, no its not Disney World. Its the media center at Daytona. I expect to be there and in place by 11AM.

-1:20PMSo here’s what happened…I got here after fighting traffic, just in time for the drivers meeting. I ran into that and ever since then I’ve been trying t get on the internet.

Well gang they finally got my internet and up and my camera decided it wasn’t going to work. Finally got it though so here’s your first update.

In the drivers meeting, Mike Helton stressed that NASCAR will be watching the drivers in 3 zones around the track. The corners obviously, and the infield tri-oval; Helton also stressed that NASCAR will also be paying attention to what he termed ‘aggressive driving’ all around the track.

Helton said that not only will they be looking at the practice of bump drafting, but general ‘aggressive driving’ as well.

“That can include side by side contact as well,” he said.

Light rain showers are falling here, but not the kind that will cause this day to be a washout.

More later…

-3:15PM The command to firew engines has finally beengivne...lets go racing! Audio from the drivers meeting

-3:55PM The green flag fell at 3:23 and the field tiptoed around the track, almost as if they were afraid to mix it up. The field stayed two by two for nearly ten laps before Paul Menard began to dance out of line in and tried to make his way forward. Dale Earnhardt Junior began to make his presence known shortly after and he began to creep forward. Tony Stewart took over the point form Jeff Burton on lap 13 as Paul Menard lost the draft and began to fall back. Dale Junior’s aggressive march towards the front began to fade as his handling began to go away. READ the complete story on the Front Page
