Hendrick Motorsports Looking To Erase Daytona 500 Disappointment
CSD Staff, February 24

FONTANA, Calif. -- After a disappointing performance in the season opening Daytona 500, Hendrick Motorsports looks to recover in today’s Auto Club 500 at California Speedway.

Just as they did last year.

The dominant NASCAR Sprint Cup organization in 2007, Hendrick opened 2008 with similar expectations, plus a media consensus as preseason favorites.

Reigning and two-time series champion Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500 pole while newest teammate and fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the non-points Budweiser Shootout the week prior to the Daytona 500.

Four-time series champion Jeff Gordon last year’s series runner-up, sought his fourth Daytona 500 victory. Casey Mears seemed poised for a breakout year with new crew chief Alan Gustafson, played the dark-horse role.

But only Earnhardt finished inside the top 10 at Daytona — ninth. Suspension problems relegated Gordon to 39th. A late-race spinout put Johnson in 27th. Mears, running in the top five with five laps remaining, finished 36th after hitting an outside wall.

Fast-forward to California, where Hendrick teams hope to duplicate last season’s West Coast panacea — a rebound that followed similarly frustrating results in the 2007 Daytona 500.

Gordon was Hendrick’s highest finisher in last year’s “Great American Race” — 10th. Mears finished 20th. Then-teammate Kyle Busch finished 24th while Johnson finished 39th following an accident.

Here’s the precedent: Seven Chevrolets finished in the top 10 of last year’s Auto Club 500 at California, including three HMS drivers.

Gordon finished second behind winner Matt Kenseth. Johnson finished third and Busch finished ninth. Mears finished 31st

Gordon led the chart in Saturday’s rain shortened final practice. And since points set the field, Jimmie Johnson will again lead from the pole.

As it has all weekend, weather may be the story of the day today. Rain cancelled Friday qualifying, shortened Saturday’s Cup practice and postponed the Nationwide Series race until today.

The forecast for today isn’t exactly encouraging; the National Weather service has issued a flood watch until 2PM PST, that’s 5 PM on the east coast and hour after the race is scheduled to start. The chance for rain is at 90%, although that chance tapers off towards the evening.

Rain forces rescheduling of Nationwide race
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,February 24

FONTANA, Calif. -- For the second straight day, rain played havoc with the racing schedule at Auto Club Speedway, forcing postponement of Saturday's Stater Bros. 300 Nationwide Series race and shortening Sprint Cup practice to 34 minutes.

The Nationwide race has been rescheduled for Sunday, to be run after the conclusion of the Sprint Cup Auto Club 500, which has a scheduled start time of 4 p.m. ET.

Kyle Busch holds off Bodine for truck series win
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,February 24

FONTANA, Calif. -- Kyle Busch has come of age -- literally.

At age 16, Busch was kicked out of Auto Club Speedway and banned from the Craftsman Truck Series race there because the weekend also featured a CART event sponsored by cigarette maker Marlboro, and federal law precluded persons under age 18 from participating in events sponsored by tobacco companies.

J. Gordon: NASCAR right to cancel qualifying
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,February 24

FONTANA, Calif. -- Jeff Gordon believes NASCAR made the right call in canceling Friday's on-track activity at Auto Club Speedway.

Intermittent rain, along with "weepers," or seepage through the racing surface, made conditions unsafe. The weepers frustrated speedway officials' efforts to dry the track, forcing cancellation of qualifying sessions for all three of NASCAR's top touring series.

Bowyer, Burton Bury Hatchet
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,February 24

FONTANA, Calif. --The bottom line is that Richard Childress Racing teammates Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer were steaming after last Sunday's Daytona 500, and their frustration led to an angry exchange captured by TV cameras in the garage after the race.

Television reports alleged Burton was angry at his teammate for side-drafting off Burton's No. 31 Chevrolet and causing him to fall back through the field, but Burton indicated that wasn't the case.

Is Labonte joining Childress?
by Lee Spencer, FOXSports.com,February 24

FONTANA, Calif. - "No, no, no!"

That was the response from team owner Richard Childress before the question of Bobby Labonte's status in a fourth car at his organization was even broached Saturday afternoon at Auto Club Speedway.

Yahoo! Sports reported that Labonte, who currently drives the No. 43 Cheerios Dodge for Petty Enterprises, could be driving a fourth car for Richard Childress in 2009 and maybe as early as later this season. It was also speculated that current sponsor General Mills would make the trip to Childress with him.
