Kyle Busch captures Las Vegas pole
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,March 1

LAS VEGAS -- The NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader, a native son of Las Vegas, will lead the field to the green flag in Sunday's UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Continuing his remarkable start to the 2008 season, Kyle Busch knocked Carl Edwards off the pole during Friday's qualifying session, turning a lap in 29.613 seconds (182.352 mph) to Edwards' 29.738 seconds (181.586 mph).

In six events in NASCAR's top three touring series this year, Busch has scored six top-five finishes. He leads the points standings in the Cup and Craftsman Truck Series and stands second to teammate Tony Stewart in the Nationwide Series, where he has finished second in both of Stewart's wins.

"I've seen it coming for some time," third-place qualifier Mark Martin (181.293 mph) said of Busch's recent success. "Right now, he's the wheel man of the series. You watch Kyle Busch drive, and he takes your breath. I've been there before, and he's at the top of his game."

Busch captured his third pole in 117 Cup races and his third top-10 starting position in five events at Las Vegas.

"If we happened to come out here and win the thing this weekend, that would be pretty cool," said Busch, aware that no driver has won a Las Vegas Cup race from the pole. "Sooner or later, you wonder when the fall's going to happen, but I'm a pretty good surfer, and as long as this wave is going, I'm going to ride it."

Because his car felt loose during the qualifying run, Edwards was surprised he was able to post a time near the top of the board.

"That was pretty exciting," Edwards said. "I didn't even think we'd be on the board there. It was pretty free. . . I'm glad Kyle beat me by the margin he did, because I don't think I could have run that lap in a hundred tries."

With rain having washed out the Feb. 22 qualifying session for last Sunday's Auto Club 500, this was the first Cup series test of NASCAR's new format, in which all cars required to make the field on speed take their time trials at the end of the session.

Mike Skinner (fifth overall at 181.117 mph) was fastest of the go-or-go-home drivers. Kurt Busch, Patrick Carpentier, David Reutimann, Dale Jarrett, Ken Schrader, Michael Waltrip and Brian Vickers also made the field.

Johnny Sauter, an 11th-hour substitute for Jon Wood in the Wood Brothers Ford, wrecked off Turn 2 on his first qualifying lap and won't race on Sunday. Also failing to qualify were AJ Allmendinger, Joe Nemechek and John Andretti.

Notes: Jeff Gordon (fourth at 181.238 mph) was the fastest Hendrick Motorsports driver. His teammate, two-time defending Cup champion and three-time defending Vegas race winner Jimmie Johnson, will start 33rd. . . Schrader qualified for his first Cup race since October 2007 at Talladega. He'll start 19th.

Dodges can't dodge the wall
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 1

LAS VEGAS -- Perhaps they should rename Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race the UAW-Dodgeball 400.

In Friday's first practice session for Sunday's UAW-Dodge 400, no fewer than six Dodge drivers had scrapes with the wall. Turns 1 and 4 were particularly unkind to the Dodge Boys.

Atlanta-California Trade Date?
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 1

LAS VEGAS --Appearing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to announce he would match AutoTrader.com's $1-million gift to Speedway Children's Charities, Bruton Smith indicated he is actively seeking to swap race dates between his Atlanta Motor Speedway and ISC-owned Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

The Speedway Motorsports Inc. chairman said he had met with NASCAR officials several times to discuss an exchange of dates that would bring the 2009 Labor Day weekend Cup race to Atlanta and move the October Chase for the Sprint Cup event to Auto Club Speedway.

Helmet Toss Anyone?
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 1

LAS VEGAS --Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage has come up with a novel way to help NASCAR return to its roots. He's actively encouraging displays of passion on the racetrack.

"I'm offering $15,000 for any helmet thrown by a Cup series driver during a race between now and the April 6th Samsung 500 (at Texas)," Gossage said. "I have a huge helmet collection from drivers through the years, and it would be great to add to the collection.

8,888 Fans Pulling For Earnhardt
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 1

LAS VEGAS --Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a legion of supporters, but there are 8,888 fans who will be rooting particularly hard for him to win the 2008 Cup championship. Playing on the new No. 88 car number Earnhardt adopted when he joined Hendrick Motorsports for the 2008 season, Las Vegas Motor Speedway sold 8,888 advance tickets that come with a special codicil for the spring Cup race in 2009.

Those fans put down an $88 deposit toward the purchase of their tickets. Should Earnhardt win the title, LVMS will refund the deposits, and fans will watch the 2009 Cup race for free.

NASCAR Could Be Going Motorcycle Racing
By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, February 29

As Bike Week kicked off Friday in Daytona Beach Florida comes word that NASCAR may announce during the events, which run through March 9, that they are purchasing a motorcycle racing division from the American Motorcyclist Association.

The AMA, which was founded in 1924, announced last September that they were getting out of the racing series promotions business and would seek series promoters for each of its professional and amateur racing series.
