TWO FOR TWO
Edwards rolls to 2nd straight Cup win: NASCAR finds infraction in winning car
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,March 3

LAS VEGAS -- During the Sprint Cup Series’ brief sojourn in Las Vegas, it wasn’t a roll of the dice that propelled Carl Edwards to his second straight Cup win and the ninth of his career.

It was the roll of a tire -- and what didn’t happen afterward.

With the help of a judgment call from NASCAR, which opted not to penalize Edwards after a tire rolled away on pit road, Edwards streaked to victory in the UAW-Dodge 400 Sprint Cup race Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In a two-lap dash after NASCAR stopped the race for nearly 18 minutes to clean the track in the wake of a wreck that wiped out contenders Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon, Edwards pulled away from Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win by .504 seconds.

The victory gave Edwards the series points lead for the first time in his career, by 21 points over Las Vegas polesitter Kyle Busch (11th Sunday) and by 41 over Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman (14th).

But during postrace inspection of Edwards’ No. 99 Ford, NASCAR officials discovered the lid, or cover, was missing from the oil reservoir encasement, an infraction that falls under the general classification of unauthorized aerodynamic modifications -- the intent being to allow air to pass from the inside to the outside of the car.

Edwards’ car will be taken to NASCAR’s research and development center in Concord, N.C., for further examination. If penalties are warranted, they will be announced later, but as of now the victory stands, according to NASCAR spokesperson Ramsey Poston.

Greg Biffle finished third, followed by Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton. Kasey Kahne, David Ragan, Travis Kvapil, Denny Hamlin and Mark Martin completed the top 10 in a race punctuated by a record 11 caution periods.

NASCAR finds infraction in Edwards' winning car
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 3

LAS VEGAS -- For now, Carl Edwards' victory in Sunday's UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway remains intact.

But during postrace inspection, NASCAR officials discovered the lid, or cover, was missing from the oil reservoir encasement, an infraction that falls under the general classification of unauthorized aerodynamic modifications -- the intent being to allow air to pass from the inside to the outside of the car.

Stewart, Gordon Ok after hard Crashes
By Greg Engle,Editor,Cup Scene Daily, March 3

Two of NASCAR’s highest profile drivers suffered hard crashes Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Tony Stewart suffered a right front tire failure on his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on lap 108 while running in fifth place. Stewart was cautious in exiting his crumpled machine after the impact; he was scored in 43rd place.

Earnhardt second-guesses his strategy
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 3

LAS VEGAS -- Given a second chance, UAW-Dodge 400 runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr. would have done things differently on the Lap 263 restart that changed the complexion of Sunday's Sprint Cup race.

Earnhardt closed up on leader Carl Edwards as the field approached the green flag with five laps left in the 267-lap event at 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon hung back, testing the limits of NASCAR's two-car length limit on restarts.

Franchitti best of a bad lot
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 3

LAS VEGAS --It was a bad day for Raybestos rookies at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Consider that Dario Franchitti was best-in-class with a 33rd-place finish.

Doubtless, Franchitti would have run better, had he not blown a right front tire late in the race.

Roush closing gap on Hendrick
By Lee Spencer, FOXSports.com,March 3

LAS VEGAS - Jack Roush doesn't like getting his butt kicked.

For all intents and purposes, that's what happened to Roush Fenway Racing and every other team last year by Hendrick Motorsports.

Tough Tony Took a Tender Trip off the Track
By Amy Hair,Senior Columnist,Cup Scene Daily, March 3

I hate when we’re reminded that our fearless fellows are just as human as the rest of us. It takes away from the fantasy we’ve built up in our minds, the one where our men are just short of being declared immortal. I mean if I was to take some guy off the street and throw him in one of those mean looking cars and tell him to “have fun” while he fought off 42 other men going 190 mph for oh…somewhere around 3 ½ hours…after he got through the excitement of being asked, he’d realize real quick he couldn’t do it.

We’re so used to our guys that have years of experience buried in their fire suits. It enables them to give off that aura of invincibility, so much so that we tend to forget that even these guys probably complain when they stub their toes or get a splinter in their pinky finger. They’re just as human as the guy on the street.

This Day in NASCAR History
By Bill Marx, The Sporting News,March 3

1991: Kyle Petty wins his second consecutive GM Goodwrench 500 at Rockingham, leading 380 of 492 laps. Of Petty's eight Cup victories, three have come at Rockingham. Even though he leads 380 laps, this is his "least" dominating victory at the Rock. In his 1990 victory, he leads 433 laps, but that still can't touch the fall race at Rockingham in 1992 when he leads 484 laps..
