HOME SWEET HOME
Test A Welcome Pit Stop For Phoenix Native J.J. Yeley
By CSD Staff,March 4

PHOENIX, Ariz.– With its well-known roster of fitness spas and desert resorts, Phoenix’s reputation isn’t necessarily that of a diet-buster.

Bob Osborne says Carl Edwards' driving helped the No. 99 team adjust its gameplan after an early penalty.

Unless you’re J.J. Yeley and can smell the home cooking across state lines.

“Well, my diet has been going good, so coming back is going to kill me,” Yeley said Monday, during the lunch break on the first day of a two-day NASCAR Sprint Cup Series test at Phoenix International Raceway.

Citing Mexican and regional food favorites, Yeley rued his caloric damage, but also admitted he was happy about the testing stopover in his hometown – and not solely for culinary reasons.

“It's always fun to come back here to Phoenix because this is the race track I have the most experience,” Yeley said during Monday’s visit to Phoenix’s infield media center. “I've had a lot of good runs here. So far today, we were third-fastest in the morning practice. It's nice to come back and feel comfortable and go fast.”

Third on the speed chart after Monday’s morning session – at 131.062 mph (27.468 seconds) – Yeley trailed only session leader Paul Menard at 131.186 mph (27.442 seconds) and Juan Pablo Montoya, who was second-quickest at 131.128 mph (27.454 seconds).

The two-day test at PIR is the fourth of six NASCAR-sanctioned tests in 2008 for NASCAR Sprint Cup teams, which were scheduled for three sessions Monday and two on Tuesday.

For Yeley, it’s another step in the acclimation process to his new team, Hall of Fame Racing. He’s 31st in the series standings following the season’s first three events, and expects improvement once communication lines solidify.

“You know, for me, after yesterday's run, I was really looking forward to getting back here to Phoenix,” Yeley said of last Sunday’s 27th-place finish at Las Vegas. “The Hall of Fame team ran well here last year right out of the box. The car was very fast, very comfortable.

Edwards on infraction: “Focus on things I can control.”
By CSD Staff, March 4

Carl Edwards' victory Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway coming on the heels of a win the previous week at the Auto Club Speedway in California made him the Sprint Cup series leader for the first time in his career. But in post race inspection NASCAR officials said the oil tank lid on his Ford wasn't secure, which most likely result in a penalty this week.

Despite the possible setback however, Edwards said Monday he will stay focused on what he does best.

Skinner Replaces Allmendinger Temporarily
CSD Staff, March 4

Red Bull Racing pulled A.J. Allmendinger from the No. 84 Toyota Monday, replacing him temporarily with Craftsman Truck Series champion Mike Skinner.

"We're at a crossroads where we need to make a change that will elevate the No. 84 team to success," Frye said. "AJ's our guy and he's a talented driver, but there's a lot being asked of him. In order for him to be successful, we have to get this team pointed in the right direction."

Racing commission rescinds Wallace's penalty
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 4

Perhaps the National Stock Car Racing Commission's ruling Monday will give Carl Edwards a glimmer of hope.

In a majority decision, the commission upheld Rusty Wallace Racing's appeal of penalties assessed for an oil tank cover infraction found Feb. 15 on the No. 64 Chevrolet driven by David Stremme during postqualifying inspection for the Camping World 300 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

3 races can tell us a lot

Obviously, it's a little early to be talking about who's going to qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and who's not.

Well, maybe not.

For the last several weeks the buzz has centered on young Kyle Busch.

With top five finishes in all the races during Daytona Speedweeks followed by a fourth in the Daytona 500 Busch had become the early season standout.

By Amy Hair,Senior Columnist,Cup Scene Daily, March 4

So you think Goodyear was just handed the success they’ve had with NASCAR? You think Goodyear isn’t living up to its expectations…i.e. the tire blow outs during Sunday’s race at Las Vegas? Well hold your horses for just a minute. Let’s look at a bit of history…

7: Record for poles won for Cup races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, site of Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500. The record is held by Ryan Newman and Buddy Baker. Despite winning six of his seven in a row -- March 2003 through October 2005 - Newman had only one top-five finish during that stretch, a fifth place in March 2004. It is Newman's only top five in 12 Cup races at Atlanta. Baker has two wins at Atlanta, including one from the pole (March 1979).

2001: Ron Hornaday Jr., winner of three Craftsman Truck Series titles, picks up the only top 10 in his 45-race Cup career, finishing ninth in the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas. Hornaday's last Cup start was at Homestead in 2003. Hornaday, the defending CTS champion, also won truck titles in 1996 and 1998. He has won 33 truck races and four Nationwide races.
