Racing commission rescinds Wallace's penalty Posted:0535hrs By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Perhaps the National Stock Car Racing Commission's ruling Monday will give Carl Edwards a glimmer of hope. In a majority decision, the commission upheld Rusty Wallace Racing's appeal of penalties assessed for an oil tank cover infraction found Feb. 15 on the No. 64 Chevrolet driven by David Stremme during postqualifying inspection for the Camping World 300 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
The commission's ruling rescinds those penalties. In upholding Wallace's appeal, the commission issued the following statement: "After reviewing the testimony and evidence presented during the hearing, the commission determined that the cover appeared to be fastened. All bolts appeared to be fully engaged. The slight deflection at one corner of the cover which gave rise to the penalty was arguable, given the overall design of the oil tank reservoir encasement." On Sunday, NASCAR inspectors found the cover to the oil tank reservoir encasement on Edwards' winning Sprint Cup car was completely "off." On Monday, the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford was on the way to NASCAR's research and development center in Concord, N.C., for further evaluation. If NASCAR deems that penalties are warranted in Edwards' case, the sanctioning body will announce them later this week. With consecutive wins at Auto Club Speedway and Las Vegas, Edwards holds the Cup series lead by 21 points over Kyle Busch. All told, NASCAR penalized five teams at Daytona for oil tank cover violations, which fall under the general classification of unauthorized aerodynamic modifications. In addition to the penalties assessed to Rusty Wallace Racing, the teams of owners Johnny Davis (No. 0), James Finch (No. 1), Carl Haas (No. 14) and DeLana Harvick (No. 77) were slapped with identical punishments. The commission will hear appeals from the Nos. 0, 1 and 14 teams this week, along with the Sprint Cup appeal of owner/driver Robby Gordon, who was docked 100 driver and owner points and fined $100,000 for using an unapproved nose on his No. 7 Dodge.
