HAMMER DOWN
NASCAR comes down hard on Edwards
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 6

In keeping with other penalties for violations found on the new racecar, NASCAR on Wednesday penalized driver Carl Edwards 100 Sprint Cup championship points and car owner Jack Roush 100 owner points for a violation discovered after Edwards won Sunday's UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Jeff Burton talks about the special characteristics of Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Inspectors found that the cover of the oil reservoir encasement mounted behind the driver's seat was off, a circumstance that constitutes an unauthorized aerodynamic modification. NASCAR rules require that the cover be bolted securely to the encasement.

In addition to the penalties levied against Edwards and Roush, crew chief Bob Osborne was fined $100,000, suspended from the next six Sprint Cup events (until April 30) and placed on probation through Dec. 31, 2008.

Though NASCAR did not strip the No. 99 team of the race win, Edwards will not receive a 10-point bonus for the victory if he subsequently qualifies for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. The 100-point penalty drops Edwards from first to seventh in the Cup standings.

Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith issued a statement after the ruling.

“The bolt holding the lid in place failed in its purpose as a result of vibration harmonics generated by the car and the race track during the race. The bolt was secure enough to survive 225 miles of practice, perhaps up to 399 of 400 miles of the race and the scrutiny of numerous inspections.

It’s a tough business for any race team to have to pledge $100,000, 100 points and a six race crew chief suspension as an indemnity payment to NASCAR against a promise forced from us by NASCAR that no bolt will ever fail its purpose under race conditions.

We are currently evaluating whether or not the circumstances justify submitting to the unpleasantness of the appeal process, but from a competitive standpoint,

we believe it is in our best interest to have Bob Osborne begin serving the penalty now. Chris Andrews, our chief engineer, will be at the track on Friday and Saturday to lead the No. 99 team and general manager Robbie Reiser will join Chris on the pit box Sunday during the race. We are confident that we have the depth of talent in our organization and the strength in Carl Edwards and the No. 99 team to overcome this penalty, should that end up being the final outcome of this unhappy episode.”

In other penalty news, the National Stock Car Racing Commission amended a penalty to the No. 14 Richardson-Haas car in the Nationwide Series, transferring a $15,000 fine from crew chief Robert Edwards to the current majority owner of Richardson-Haas Motorsports, Donnie Richardson.

The commission upheld penalties levied against JD Motorsports' No. 0 car. As with the Richardson-Haas car, penalties were levied for infractions involving oil tank covers that were not securely fastened. Robert Edwards and No. 0 crew chief Gene Allnutt have been suspended for six races. Allnutt also must pay a $15,000 fine for the violation.

Commission rules in R. Gordon's favor
Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 6

Robby Gordon hasn't won a Sprint Cup race in nearly five years. If he forgot what it feels like to win, Wednesday's decision by the National Stock Car Racing Commission will serve as a reminder.

The commission rescinded three crippling penalties levied by NASCAR for an unapproved front bumper on his No. 7 Dodge discovered Feb. 8 during prequalifying inspection for the season-opening Daytona 500.

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Paving of the racing surface at Darlington Raceway has been completed, track President Chris Browning announced.

"This begins a new chapter in the history books at Darlington Raceway," said Browning. "We are very excited to be finished with the paving so that we can now focus on preparing for the upcoming Dodge Challenger 500 race weekend, May 8-10."

A Sit Down With NSCS Director John Darby at the Phoenix Test
CSD Staff, March 6

This week’s two-day NASCAR Sprint Cup Series test at Phoenix International Raceway has proven extremely beneficial to the 47 participating teams, said NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby on Tuesday afternoon.

Sandwiched between last week’s event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and this Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the two-day session marked the fourth of six NASCAR-sanctioned tests in 2008. This season marks the first full year of competition for NASCAR’s new race car; teams ran it in 16 of 36 events in 2007, including both events at Phoenix.

Time Has Come For Teams Flirting With Top-35 Cut-Off
CSD Staff, March 6

For the NASCAR Sprint Cup teams residing in the proximity of the 35th position in car owner points, the time has come to get it in gear. Atlanta Motor Speedway is the fourth stop on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, and the second to last chance for teams in the top 35 of the 2007 car owner points to guarantee themselves a spot on Sunday.
The View From Fanville
It’s in the Gut With Robby And Carl
By Amy Hair,Senior Columnist,Cup Scene Daily, March 6

Let the fussing and fuming begin! Ha…if ever there could be two very different scenarios and resulting penalties, these two have taken the prize. Carl Edwards was slapped full force, and Robby Gordon was given a reprieve…fair? Foul? True?
