Boyer has been working at the Hall of Fame shop. A nine-year veteran of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Boyer also served as a race engineer for Ganassi (2001-2004) and in 2006 and 2007 led the organization's Car of Tomorrow research initiative.
"Steve has earned the respect and trust of J.J. and the team in his short tenure here," Hall of Fame co-owner Tom Garfinkel said in a statement. "(Co-owner) Jeff (Moorad) and I are looking forward to having him in a more significant leadership role. He has a tremendous amount of experience that will be valuable to J.J., Hall of Fame Racing and the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota."
Yeley is 31st in the Cup points standings after finishing 25th Sunday at Bristol.
The installation of a new crew chief at Hall of Fame follows the release Monday of crew chief Slugger Labbe and other crew members from the No. 27 Toyota team of Bill Davis Racing, which has suspended its activities because of a lack of sponsorship. Former Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve was slated to drive the car in 2008 but failed to qualify the No. 27 for the Daytona 500 and has made no more attempts at Cup races this season.
After substituting two of his Craftsman Truck Series drivers, Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson, in the No. 27 at California, Las Vegas and Atlanta, Davis parked the car before the Food City 500 at Bristol. Skinner missed the Auto Club 500 in California because of a qualifying rainout and ran 30th at Las Vegas. Benson failed to qualify for the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta.
