NASCAR Drivers Give March Madness Predictions
Posted:0535hrs
CSD Staff

Although the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season is still young, the first off-week of the year comes at a perfect time for some
drivers – it’s March Madness time, a rite of spring for many in the garage.
With many drivers making their homes in North Carolina, it’s no coincidence that the UNC Tar Heels were the overwhelming
favorite to win the championship among the group.
--(Cont'd From Front Page)--
AJ Allmendinger (No. 84 Toyota)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, Texas
Champion: Kansas
“Because Kansas and North Carolina can’t play each other for the title, we’re going all Big 12 in the championship game. But I like Kansas. They’re just too tough. They have been all year. If you need any help with your bracketology, just call me.”
Clint Bowyer (No. 07 Chevrolet)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, Memphis
Champion: Kansas
“This is going to work out perfect. When Kansas beats Roy Williams and North Carolina on Saturday, I’ll head to San Antonio after the Cup race in Texas for the National Championship. It looks like Kansas was meant to beat Roy Williams and I was meant to go the National Championship. I love it when I plan comes together.”
Jeff Burton (No. 31 Chevrolet)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, Pittsburgh, UCLA
Champion: Kansas
"As much as I would love to see my Duke Blue Devils pull it off, I don't think it's going to happen. I belive Kansas is going to win the championship. They have a great team and have played well over the last few games."
Kurt Busch (No. 2 Dodge)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, Memphis
Champion: Memphis
"Gotta go with North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA and Memphis making up the Final Four. Of course I'm pulling for my Arizona Wildcats to make it as far as possible, but even if they win their opener against West Virginia, they have to get past Duke and Xavier just to get a shot at knocking off UCLA in the West. I don't see it happening. I'll go with Memphis winning it all, but I'll have to pull for my PAC-10 teams, even if it means cheering for UCLA. I watched some of the tournament ganes last weekend. It'll be really interesting to see how far teams like Georgia, Drake and Butler can go."
Kevin Harvick (No. 29 Chevrolet)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Georgetown, Memphis, UCLA
Champion: North Carolina
“DeLana and I went to the Duke/Carolina game earlier this year and I was impressed by North Carolina’s potential. I think they have a few veteran guys that could carry them a long way in the tournament.”
Bobby Labonte (No. 43 Dodge)
“I’ll admit that I don’t know very much about college basketball. But I have been following the Texas Longhorns. When you’re from Texas, you always follow the Burnt Orange. Even though they lost to Kansas in the conference tournament, they look to me like they have the talent to win six games. D.J. Augustine is a really good point guard and you need talent at that crucial position.”
Kyle Petty (No. 45 Dodge)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis, UConn
Champion: North Carolina
“My Final Four is North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis and UConn. Memphis and North Carolina will meet in the national championship game, with Carolina cutting down the nets in San Antonio. That was my best Dick Vitale impersonation. No, I just think that North Carolina is playing their best basketball at the right time. Two months ago I don’t think you would have picked them to win the ACC regular season and tournament. And Hansbrough is a beast.”
David Ragan (No. 6 Ford)
Final Four Picks: Memphis, North Carolina, Georgetown, UCLA
Champion: North Carolina
"I am all about March Madness. I stay glued to the TV for the entire tournament. This year I have Memphis, North Carolina, Georgetown and UCLA in the final four. The Tar Heels will be tough to beat because of their depth and offensive fire power, but Georgetown will be a challenge if they meet up in the national semifinal. My money is on the Tar Heels to cut down the nets in San Antonio."
Elliott Sadler (No. 19 Dodge)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, Texas
Champion: North Carolina
"It's finally here, March Madness. As a college basketball fan, we follow our teams all year long to get to this point. They get seeded throughout the year, then it all comes down to the selection committee and how they line up in the brackets. I love it because one upset can mess up everyone's brackets for the rest of the tournament.
"You all know I'm a big UNC fan, so it's no surprise I picked them to go all the way. The team is strong, the defense is on their game and Tyler Hansborough has been playing incredible. I'm picking my UNC Tar Heels to go the distance and cut down the nets in San Antonio."
Brad Daugherty (ESPN Analyst)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, Pittsburgh, UCLA
Champion: North Carolina
"Pittsburgh may be a surprise, but I feel like North Carolina will win the national championship."
Todd Bodine (No. 30 Toyota)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Georgetown, Texas, UConn
Champion: Texas
“It’s just a wild guess. I like to watch interesting competition and there is going to be a major upset somewhere.”
Colin Braun (No. 6 Ford)
Champion: UCLA
"I'm going to go with UCLA to win it all. They have a great record and have made it to the Final Four the last two years, so I think it's their turn to win the championship. Florida isn't in it this year so maybe they have a shot now."
Chad Chaffin (No. 40 Key Motorsports Chevrolet)
Final Four Picks: Tennessee, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Duke
Champion: Tennessee
"The best college basketball in the country is being played in Tennessee this year (UT, Memphis, Vanderbilt, etc. for the men and UT for the women) and I believe that that will be proven out in the NCAA Tournament with Tennessee and Memphis making it through to the final!"
Brendan Gaughan (No. 10 Ford)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, UCLA
Champion: Georgetown
“I think NASCAR should shut down for the month of March. As a former player, this is the best time of year. It’s an experience you’ll never forget, whether you go out in the first round or play in the final. The great thing about the 64-team tournament is that everyone has a connection to a team and with winning comes bragging rights. We have a guy from North Carolina, Syracuse and Villanova, and whoever goes furthest in the tournament can talk smack over the course of the next couple of weeks.
“I’m especially excited that Georgetown has a team that looks like it can make it to the Final Four this year. With just one race in the next few weeks, I’m going to be glued to the TV pulling for the Hoyas to make it to San Antonio.”
Scott Lagasse Jr. (No. 20 Ford)
Final Four Picks: North Carolina, Kansas, Texas, UCLA
Champion: North Carolina
"I like North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough, he is tough and plays scrappy, that's the type of guy you rally behind all the way to the championship."
Eric McClure (No. 24 Chevrolet)
Final Four Picks: Memphis, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas
Champion: Memphis
“My trainer was on the Memphis Sweet 16 team in 1994 and he tells me this is the year so I’m going with his recommendation. Since Virginia had a down season, and is in the ACC, I can’t bring myself to pull for an ACC team, so we’ll go with the Tigers. Virginia, however, is in the CBI tourney, competing for the honor of being the 98th best team in the country. Go Hoos.”
