SILLY SEASON BEGINS?
General Mills moving to RCR. Will Labonte follow?
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 2

Change is in the air at Richard Childress Racing and Petty Enterprises, as both organizations announced major, interrelated developments Tuesday.

Team owner Richard Childress released a statement indicating General Mills will sponsor a fourth full-time Chevrolet team with car No. 33 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, starting in 2009. General Mills, with its Cheerios and Hamburger Helper brands, currently sponsors the No. 43 Dodge driven by Bobby Labonte at Petty Enterprises.

Labonte's contract with Petty expires at the end of 2008, and there has been speculation that Labonte will become the driver for the fourth Childress team. Labonte currently drives a partial schedule for Childress in the Nationwide Series. Labonte has not indicated whether he will stay with Petty or move to another team in 2009, and Childress says he will name the driver of the No. 33 at a later time.

"Bobby is one of the most marketable and popular drivers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series," said Brian Moffitt, Petty Enterprises vice president of marketing. "He and his family share the ideals and values of the Petty Organization, and he remains a key component to the long-term future of Petty Enterprises. While there is substantial sponsorship interest in Bobby and Petty Enterprises, we will carefully consider our options to ensure the continuation of our rich tradition and to build on current momentum.

"Prospective partners are well aware of the special power of the Petty brand, as numerous surveys and marketing groups have identified Richard Petty as one of the most iconic brands in all of sports."

Petty Enterprises also announced Tuesday that Craftsman Truck Series regular Chad McCumbee will replace Kyle Petty behind the wheel of the No. 45 Dodge for Sunday's Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. McCumbee subbed for Petty last year at Pocono during Petty's tenure in the TNT broadcast booth.

"Texas is a good track for him," Petty said in a team release. "He had a strong run going in the truck race there last year. At Pocono, he did a great job filling in for me when I went into the booth.

"Everyone at Petty Enterprises believes in Chad and his abilities. Texas gives us a chance to get another good look at Chad without throwing him to the wolves. He should be relaxed, because he knows he can get the job done there."

Cottonelle introduces the 'Lap 100 stretch'
By Michael Smith, Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 2

If Cottonelle has its way, NASCAR will have its own version of the seventh-inning stretch.

Cottonelle, which introduced the slogan "Be kind to your behind" in January, plans to ask fans at NASCAR races this week to stand up for the Lap 100 stretch. Texas Motor Speedway will be the site for Nationwide and Sprint Cup events Saturday and Sunday.

12 Gauge: The April Fools edition after Martinsville
By Bill Marx,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 2

Each week 12 gauge takes a look at the top 12 drivers in the Sprint Cup Series. All race and performance references are from Sunday's Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway. This is our April Fools' Day edition, so like many things you come across on the Internet, don't believe everything you read.

1. Jeff Burton, 915. NASCAR's penalty against Burton for calling out rookie Michael McDowell after Sunday's race sticks in my craw. A 25-point penalty for excessive scolding ... that, I could accept. But forcing Richard Childress to put Ward Burton in the No. 31 this week at Texas is crossing the line.

By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, April 1

MOSCOW Ru.-NASCAR officials met in emergency session early Tuesday morning and voted to ban Michael Waltrip for life.

They also voted that the donuts manager of communications Ramsey Posten brought to the meeting were ‘most excellent’.

“We have decided to ban Michael Waltrip from the sport for life,” vice president of corporate communications Jim Hunter said between bites, “The reason? Well because we can.”
