LOOKING FOR MORE
Burton Seeking Third Texas Motor Speedway Win
CSD Staff, April 3

He rolls into Texas on top of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings, and as this week’s defending event champion.

VIDEO

Interview with Penske Racing’s Roy McCauley, the reigning Daytona 500 champion crew chief for the No. 12 Dodge and driver Ryan Newman.

That’s Jeff Burton’s good fortune heading into Sunday’s Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

It’s quite a turnaround from 2004 and ‘05, when Burton — once considered a championship contender — finished 18th in the final series standings for two consecutive seasons.

A move to Richard Childress Racing late in ‘04 laid the groundwork for revival, which materialized with a seventh-place finish in ’06 and an eighth-place finish in ’07. A Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup participant both seasons, he also nabbed a win, each year, at Dover International Speedway in ’06 and at Texas in ’07.

During the down times, Burton never got too upset. He’s been around long enough to know that better times usually lie ahead.

“That's how this sport is,” Burton said. “When things are good you enjoy them, and you don't take it for granted. And when things are bad you have to understand that, you can't flip out about it, you just have to focus on how to be better and learn from mistakes or whatever.”

A win two weeks ago at Bristol Motor Speedway and last Sunday’s third-place finish at Martinsville Speedway gives him a 39-point margin over second-place Kevin Harvick, his RCR teammate.

Plus, Burton has historical precedence. He’s the only driver to win twice at Texas, last April and the track’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup event in 1997.

Sunday’s event also marks the first at Texas with NASCAR’s new car.

“Corner speed is the key element to winning at Texas,” Burton said. “The place is really fast and it’s fast because the corners generate a lot of speed. Having a fast car and good track position is real important.”

While Burton is on top of the world heading to Texas, he’s also cautiously optimistic.

“We know that everybody's going to step it up,” Burton said. “If we continue to run the way we're running come July, that will be running 20th. So we've got to find a way to be better. I don't know how we're going to do that, but we're continuing to work, and, you know we have a lot of room to grow.”

SMI working on NASCAR-PGA tie-in
By Jon Show and Michael Smith, Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 3

Speedway Motorsports Inc. is working with the PGA Tour to create a Nationwide Tour golf event in Charlotte for October 2009 that would be played either the weekend before or after the company's NASCAR events at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Marcus Smith, SMI's executive vice president for national sales and marketing, said he's having discussions with the PGA Tour and Charlotte-area golf courses to plan the event. SMI is the speedway's parent company. Lowe's Motor Speedway is the site for the Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 and Sprint Cup's Bank of America 500, both in October.

Inventor amused at Roush-Toyota mess
By Godwin Kelly,Daytona Beach News Journal, April 3

DAYTONA BEACH -- You have to excuse Weston Griffith Jr. for being amused by car owner Jack Roush's angst and anger over a swaybar that went missing and ended up in the Toyota camp.

Griffith was in the same situation a few years ago. In that instance, Griffith took Roush Fenway Racing and Wood Brothers Racing to court claiming those teams benefited from one of his proprietary parts.

Texas Motor Speedway Outlook:

The View From Fanville
Stand Up and Salute
By Amy Hair,Senior Columnist,Cup Scene Daily, April 3

This weekend while some of us are packing the car with tail gating goodies and coolers full of suds, there will be a group of our nation’s most important men getting ready to be a part of the pre-race celebration at Texas Motor Speedway.

One of the cool things about having hundreds of sponsors involved in our sport is that there are a few that rise above the others. The U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. National Guard and the U.S. Air Force being the top four in my opinion. In this time of mixed opinions as to whether our men and women should be overseas fighting for the freedom of others, we are reminded by these specialty wraps on NASCAR cars that no matter what our opinions may be, these are our men and women, doing what they believe is the right thing.

10: Laps run by Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Kyle Busch's No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in last year's Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Earnhardt's No. 8 DEI Chevy left the race after 288 laps because of an engine failure (which came after Kyle Busch hit Earnhardt on Lap 252). Busch, thinking he was through for the day, left the track. But the No. 5 team repaired the car, and when it couldn't find Busch, Earnhardt stepped in.

1999: Ron Hornaday Jr. wins the NAPA Card 200 Craftsman Truck Series race at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., for his 25th truck victory. The race is the 100th in the series that began in 1995, which means Hornaday wins 25 percent of the first 100 races.
