WILD RIDE
Earnhardt claims pole after McDowell's frightening crash
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 5

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The thunderous cheering that erupted Friday at Texas Motor Speedway when Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted his pole-winning qualifying lap stood in sharp contrast to the stunned silence that followed rookie Michael McDowell's frightening crash earlier in the session.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. comes out of turn four during qualifying for Sunday's Samsung 500 auto race at Texas Motor Speedway, Friday, April 4, 2008, in Fort Worth. Earnhardt Jr. earned the pole position for the race with a lap speed of 190.907 MPH in 28.286 seconds(AP Photo/Larry Papke)

Earnhardt will start from the top spot for Sunday's Samsung 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas after touring the 1.5-mile track in 28.286 seconds (190.907 mph), a lap that second-place qualifier Carl Edwards described as "screaming fast."

McDowell can thank recent safety innovations -- soft walls and NASCAR's new racecar, in particular -- for being able to start at all, after slamming nose-first into the outside wall when his car spun out of control in Turn 1 on his second qualifying lap. McDowell will take the green flag in 40th position, on an owner-points provisional.

McDowell's crash held up qualifying for 72 minutes while speedway crews welded steel "L" plating to the damaged area of the wall. The track cooled during the delay, benefitting those who qualified after the unscheduled break.

Earnhardt attributed much of his success to the No. 88 Chevrolet built for him by Hendrick Motorsports, the organization he joined this year after eight full seasons in Cup racing with family-founded Dale Earnhardt Inc.

"That's a good lap, obviously," said Earnhardt, who claimed his first pole of the season and the eighth of his career. "They just build fast cars, man. It's a lot of fun. I'm surprised we were able to do as good as we did when we were racing against 'em."

Edwards grabbed his spot on the outside of the front row with a lap at 189.487 mph. Kyle Busch was third at 189.069 mph, followed by Ryan Newman (189.043 mph) and Jimmie Johnson (188.772 mph). David Reutimann, David Ragan, Matt Kenseth, Mike Skinner and Kasey Kahne claimed starting positions six through 10.

The second driver to make a qualifying attempt, Edwards was disappointed his lap didn't stand up, but he was thankful that he didn't have to qualify after McDowell's accident.

McDowell happy to walk away from horrific crash
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 5

FORT WORTH, Texas -- During the first lap of his qualifying run Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, rookie Michael McDowell felt something wrong in his No. 00 Toyota.

Just how wrong, he would find out less than a lap later.

Five features that allowed McDowell to walk away
By Lee Spencer, FOXSports.com, April 5

FORT WORTH, Texas - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rookie Michael McDowell experienced the most vicious crash of his racing career at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday, and by far the most violent wreck in the Car of Tomorrow to date.

Here are the top five reasons McDowell was able to miraculously walk away:

On a Happier Note

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

After the verbal jousting that followed last Sunday's Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway, who would have thought any reference to the closing line of "Casablanca" -- whether slightly misquoted or not -- might apply to McDowell and veteran Jeff Burton?

Kyle Petty: I don't think I'm the problem
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 5

FORT WORTH, Texas -- On two counts, Kyle Petty was emphatic.

First, the driver of the No. 45 Petty Enterprises Dodge says it wasn't his choice to give up his seat to NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular Chad McCumbee for this weekend's Samsung 500 Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway.

With qualifying for the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway just getting into a steady pattern, David Gilliland in the No. 38 had to bow out as his car was spewing smoke before he made the first warm up lap. With his engine failing, fluids began to leave evidence trails calling for familiar maintenance trucks to come out with their dependable sawdust/cat litter like stuff to soak up the mess. Did they get it all up? Could it have contributed to the next breathtaking event we were about to witness?

61,000,000: Number of aluminum cans you could produce if you recycled the two million pounds of aluminum used in the construction of the front grandstand at Texas Motor Speedway. Putting it another way, it's enough aluminum to produce more than 10.16 million six-packs.

1959: Lee Petty wins the Gwyn Staly 160 at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway driving the No. 43. It is the only one of his 54 victories that does not come in the No. 42. It also is the first of 198 victories for the most famous number in NASCAR.
