Flipping Out
Edwards Dominates at Texas
By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, April 6

It was the kind of weekend that Carl Edwards wishes he could have all year long.

SAMSUNG 500 RESULTS

After dominating the days leading up to Sunday, Edwards put an exclamation point on his weekend at Texas Motor Speedway by leading the most laps and running away at the end to win the Samsung 500.

Edwards was able to hold off Jimmie Johnson on a green white checkered restart to become only the second driver in NASCAR Sprint Cup history to be a repeat winner at Texas.

Edwards weekend began by grabbing the outside front row during qualifying then leading the practice sessions on Saturday.

Sunday he ran a flawless race passing Kyle Busch on lap 215 and never looking back. At one point his lead was nearly 9 seconds over second place. At the end only 11 cars remained on the lead lap.

His biggest threat came from Jimmie Johnson in the closing laps. Johnson tried everything he could to attempt and close the gap, at one point coming within 1.5 seconds. His best shot came though with four laps to go after Martin Truex Junior brought out the 6th and final caution of the day when the engine in his Chevy let go.

The top five stayed out while those in sixth through 10th came in for tires in hopes of having one last stab at Edwards.

On the restart no one, including Johnson ever really came close and Edwards pulled away to the victory.

"At the end, that restart, might not look exciting to people watching," said Edwards, "but it was real exciting for me in the race car to try not to spin those tires and hold off Jimmie.”

It was the 10th win of Edwards career and his third of the season. It was also the 6th win for Roush Racing at Texas out of the 15 total races run there.

The win was vindication in a way for Edwards and his team. At Atlanta several weeks ago, Edwards Ford also looked like the car to beat. His engine let go with 50 laps to go however and he finished 42nd.

Edwards said his biggest worry Sunday came from the engine in his Ford. Especially after his crew told him that there might have been an issue with the power plant.

No. 88 team can’t get a handle on Earnhardt’s car
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 7

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. started from the pole for Sunday’s Samsung 500 and led 31 laps in the early going, but adjustments intended to improve the handling of his No. 88 Chevrolet failed to achieve the desired effects.

On Lap 267, race winner Carl Edwards passed Earnhardt heading into Turn 1 to put him a lap down. Earnhardt salvaged a 12th-place finish and held fourth place in the points standings, but it was a frustrating day for the driver who won his first NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway eight years ago.

Miserable day for Gordon
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 7

FORT WORTH, Texas - The handling of Jeff Gordon’s car was so far off Sunday that the four-time champion couldn’t drive the No. 24 Chevrolet. After fighting the car for more than 100 laps, Gordon ultimately lost control and scraped the Turn 4 wall on Lap 109.

After bringing the car to the garage, Gordon said he planned to use the rest of the race as a test session.

Newman's car fails postrace inspection

Ryan Newman, who finished fourth at Texas Sunday, failed postrace inspection when his No. 12 Dodge was found to be too high in the right rear.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said any penalties will come down early this week.

Heat takes its toll on worn-out Hamlin
CSD Staff, April 7

Denny Hamlin's postrace interview session on pit road at Texas Motor Speedway lasted just 41 seconds before he nearly passed out Sunday.

Hamlin was held on pit road as one of the top five finishers and faced the wall while his public relations representative, put cold, wet towels around his neck. Hamlin drank some sports drink to try to rehydrate, then turned to face reporters.

He made it through three questions. As he was answering the third, about how he wasn't feeling well, his voice faded out and he started wobbling. He took a cautious step backward, and was led to an arriving golf cart to take him to the infield care center. He was given intravenous fluid, iced down and told to rest.

"I'm feeling much better now," Hamlin said at the infield care center. "It really hit me when I got out of the car. I was dizzy and just needed to sit down."

Texas was a rough ride…like a mean bull in the ring for some of our guys, leaving them wishing they could have done something different…very, very different.
