BREAKOUT
Kahne Takes the pole at Texas
By Greg Engle
Cup Scene Daily,April 8

Kasey Kahne seems to be in the midst of a breakout season, early in his junior year on the circuit.

Kasey Kahne prepares to qualify for the NASCAR Samsung RadioShack 500 auto race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, Friday, April 7, 2006. Kahne earned the pole position with a speed of 190.315 mph.

Samsung/Radio Shack 500 Lineup

He’s won at Atlanta and the pole there. Friday he did again, winning the pole for Sunday’s Samsung/Radio Shack 500.

The Evernham Motorsports driver turned a 190.315-mph lap to capture the front row staring spot of his career.

"It was a great lap," said Kahne. "I knew with no mistakes it was a car that could sit on the pole."

Ironically the Dodge Charger that will lead the field Sunday is the same one he won with at Atlanta.

Kahne hopes that he can use the car to duplicate his second career Nextel Cup win at Atlanta a few weeks ago.

"I think it can come close," he said. "You've just got to make the right changes."

Rookie J.J. Yeley was second at 189.374 mph and just a tick ahead of third-place qualifier Mark Martin, who was runner-up to Kahne at Atlanta.

"The teams that excel (at Atlanta) will probably excel here, but with a more than slightly different setup," Yeley said.. "The racetrack is quite different."

"I just went out and put down a decent lap," he added "I got through Turns 1 and 2 really good, then got a little bit free off of Turn 4.”

"It probably cost me a little bit. But I'm definitely pleased with qualifying second."

After a forgettable sophomore year last year, he finished 23rd in points, Kahne hopes that his third year will be his charm. So far in 2006, Kahne has scored four top-10s in the first five races and hadn't finished lower than 11th before a blown engine knocked him to 35th at Martinsville Speedway last week.

Stewart bumps his was to IROC victory while Kinser flips again
By Greg Engle
Cup Scene Daily,April 8

They’re ‘bump-drafting’ again.

If he wins the IROC title this year, Tony Stewart told IROC's first family, Jay and Barb Signore, that he would give them the $1 million champion's prize for a race at his dirt track, Eldora Speedway, in Rossburg, Ohio. And they said yes.

After the move, where a driver uses his front bumper to push the car in front of him for more speed, was criticized by Tony Stewart at Daytona in February NASCAR issued warnings to the drivers in the Daytona 500.

Stewart wasn’t complaining Friday night.

The two-time, reigning, NASCAR Nextel Cup champion got a ‘bump draft’ from fellow Cup driver Ryan Newman and used it to take the lead with four laps to go, winning Friday night's second round of the International Race of Champions (IROC) series at Texas Motor Speedway.

The last two years, the IROC race at Texas has been a follow-the-leader procession. That wasn't the case Friday night with 11 lead changes among five drivers.

"It was without a doubt the best IROC race I've seen here at Texas," Newman said. "That's why it's $1 million for the championship."

With two laps left, the formation had Stewart leading Newman, Truex, Mark Martin and Scott Sharp, who would later drop back to seventh on the final lap.

Stewart, a former Indy Racing League champion in addition to a two-time Cup champion in NASCAR, beat Newman by 0.145-seconds for his third IROC win

Ok, kiddies, it's pop quiz time. Now think real hard.

He's one of the most underrated drivers in Nextel Cup. He'll turn 31 at the end of this month yet is already in his eighth full season of competing on NASCAR's highest level. Even so, he's never been able to finish a season higher than ninth – which he did in 2004 and which is where he currently sits heading into this weekend.

No idea which driver we're talking about? OK, let's add a few more vegetables to the stew.

He's made it to victory lane on the Cup level just three times and hasn't won in 53 starts, but he does hold the distinction of being one of 10 drivers who has won at this weekend's venue, Texas Motor Speedway.

Busch Series: Busch on Busch
By Monte Dutton
Gaston Gazette,April 8

Kurt Busch is scheduled to make his first Busch Series start today.

Ever.

As amazing as this may seem, the O’Reilly 300 marks Busch’s first appearance in the series popularly considered to a be a stepping stone to Nextel Cup.

The 2004 Cup champion leapfrogged the Busch Series — which, of course, carries the same name — entirely when he arrived at stock-car racing’s top level in 2000.

When he participated in a Thursday practice session at Texas Motor Speedway, it was the first time Busch had ever sat in a Busch Series car, he said.

Since the driver named Busch drives in Cup a car sponsored by Miller Lite, he was reluctant even to refer to the series’ name. He called it “a Grand National car.”
