TRAGEDY
NASCAR inspector killed on North Carolina Interstate
By Jim Utter, Charlotte Observer , April 9

(CHARLOTTE NC-)--Brienne Davis, one of the few fulltime female inspectors employed by NASCAR on race weekends, was killed Tuesday in a one-car accident during rush hour on northbound Interstate 77 near Huntersville, according to police and NASCAR officials.

Statement from NASCAR:
We are deeply saddened at the loss of NASCAR Sprint Cup official Brienne Davis. She was a key member of our team of inspectors and will be missed by the NASCAR community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.
A blue truck driven by Davis flipped and came to rest in the median just north of the Gilead Road exit, police said. The truck lay in two pieces, with the truck bed separated from the cab. Davis, 28, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, where she died of her injuries, officials said.

NASCAR, which has an office in Concord, released the following statement late Tuesday: "We are deeply saddened at the loss of NASCAR Sprint Cup official Brienne Davis. She was a key member of our team of inspectors and will be missed by the NASCAR community. "

The Louisiana native came to North Carolina from Houston in 2002 to begin work at Dale Earnhardt Inc. as an engine builder at age 22.

In 2004, Davis joined NASCAR as one of its fulltime inspectors that travel each week to Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck series races. Most weekends she was responsible for inspecting carburetors and manifolds.

Davis was scheduled to work at this weekend's Cup and Nationwide races at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz.

NASCAR penalizes Newman, Penske
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 9

NASCAR penalized driver Ryan Newman 25 Sprint Cup championship points and team owner Roger Penske 25 owner points for a car height violation discovered on Newman's No. 12 Penske Racing Dodge after Sunday's Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, the sanctioning body announced Tuesday.

Newman, the reigning Daytona 500 champion, finished fourth at Texas, his first top-five result since the win at Daytona.

In addition, crew chief Roy McCauley was fined $25,000 and placed on probation through Dec. 31, 2008. Newman's car failed the post-race height stick test, with the right rear quarter panel being measured as too high.

The penalty dropped Newman from a tie for eighth to 10th in the Cup championship standings.
