ROCKET LAUNCH
Newman edges Sadler for Phoenix pole
By Reid Spencer, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 11

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman streaked around one-mile Phoenix International Raceway in 26.975 seconds (133.457 mph) Thursday to win the pole for Saturday's Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race, edging Elliott Sadler for the top spot by .009 seconds.

It was Newman's first pole of the season--the eighth straight year he has won at least one pole--and the 43rd of his career, tying him with Buck Baker for 10th on the all-time list. The pole was Newman's fourth at Phoenix but the first since he won three straight from 2002 through 2004.

"We were fast in practice," said Newman, whose fourth-place finish Sunday at Texas was marred by a height stick infraction discovered after the race (the right rear of Newman's No. 12 Dodge was too high). "It wasn't a perfect lap, but it was a good lap. It was a bit conservative."

Conservative or not, it was good enough to wrest the pole from Sadler (133.412 mph), whose previous best starting position at Phoenix was ninth in 2004.

"We were so close," Sadler said. "I'd rather lose the pole by three tenths (of a second) than a hundredth."

Carl Edwards (133.378 mph) was third, followed by Mark Martin (133.368 mph) and Kasey Kahne (133.304 mph).

"I felt like I left a little bit out there, but I never imagined we'd go that fast," said Edwards, who went out 10th and didn't expect his time to stand up for the pole.

Sure enough, Newman made his qualifying run five spots later and dropped the driver of the No. 99 Roush Fenway Ford to second position, where Edwards remained until Sadler bumped him from the front row.

"It all depends on how your weekend starts out here in Phoenix," Sadler said. "Track position is very important. Pit selection is very important."

Sadler said his back is "about 80 percent." An off-track injury before the March 30 Cup race at Martinsville severely restricted his practice time that weekend.

In his first race this season in the No. 70 Haas CNC Racing Chevrolet, Johnny Sauter, who replaced Jeremy Mayfield this week, grabbed the last starting spot on speed. A new driver worked for the No. 70 car, but a new crew chief (Stewart Cooper) didn't work for Kyle Petty, who was bumped from the field by Sauter.

Cup drivers support random drug tests
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 11

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Driver Aaron Fike's recent admission that he competed in NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series under the influence of heroin came as a shock to most Sprint Cup competitors.

Though NASCAR's current drug-testing policy doesn't require it, Cup drivers overwhelmingly expressed willingness to submit to random drug testing to reassure fans, sponsors and each other that every competitor on the track is drug-free.

Top 5 and 5 to watch: Phoenix
By Bill Marx, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 11

Here's a look at the top five in points and five drivers to watch in Saturday night's Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. All statistical references are for Sprint Cup races at Phoenix unless otherwise indicated.

1. Jeff Burton, 86.1 driver rating. Burton is one of three active drivers with two wins at Phoenix (along with Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.). His wins were in 2000 and '01. In the nine races since he has been solid but not spectacular with no finish outside the top 15.

Usual suspects at Phoenix: Bowyer, Busch, Edwards
By Amanda Brahler,Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, April 11

Clint Bowyer has been on the move since opening the Nationwide Series season with a 25th-place finish at Daytona. For a driver expected to challenge defending series champion Carl Edwards for the 2008 title, that was not the start Bowyer expected.

But seven races into the season it is Bowyer, not Edwards, atop the points standings. Since Daytona, Bowyer has one win and five top-10 finishes -- four in the top five -- and he leads second-place Edwards by 57 points going into Friday night's Bashas' Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

39: Points for Toyota in the 2008 Sprint Cup manufacturers' championship points standings, which places it third behind Ford (44) and Chevrolet (43).

'93: The last time Ford or Chevy failed to win the Cup manufacturers' championship. Pontiac captured the title that year, making it the only other manufacturer to win since Buick won for the second consecutive year in 1982.
