AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Carl Edwards, who has won three of eight races this season, came back from a lap down Saturday night to finish fourth in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The Roush Fenway Racing driver lost the lap early when he made a green flag pit stop only moments before a caution flag waved. He was also penalized when members of his crew came over the wall for another stop too early and was sent to the back of the longest line for the next restart.

--(Cont'd From Front Page)-- Still, Edwards thought he might have a shot at the win until he had to make a late-race gas stop, along with most of the other leaders.

"I don't know that I've ever passed that many cars at a racetrack ever," Edwards said. "The car was really good. But we just got some setbacks there and then everything fell into place. ... To come out of here fourth, with all the trouble we had tonight, that's a blessing."

Edwards was particularly happy that he ran so well on the 1-mile oval. His wins so far this season have been on 1.5-mile tracks.

"That's a race-winning car right there," he said. "It's good that we've done really well on the mile-and-a-halfs, and to be able to come here and have that fast of a race car that I thought could win the race under some different circumstances, that's really good."
