Oh Mr. Spencer…Ever Heard of “Think Before You Speak”?
By Amy Hair Cup Scene Daily April 16 Contact

The race at Texas is over, the winner declared, and all the fellows have packed up and headed home. It was an excellent race, with a handful of caution laps and a few questionable wrecks that still have me shaking my head.
--(Cont'd From Front Page)--
As is my usual pattern, before the race began, I had on the usual racy hype that the TV provides and I was wandering the internet to see if any tid bits of juicy news were out there. When what in my ears do I hear spoken ever so callously? But Jimmy Spencer and his comments that in my opinion should have stayed in his head and not spilled out of his mouth.
The topic of the afternoon happened to be the continuing negotiations between Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and the company he drives for, DEI (Dale Earnhardt, Inc.) Speculation was being thrown around that Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, Dale Jr’s sister was getting a little frustrated with the progress, based on a few sentences she shared. ESPN quoted her as saying:
"I don't know if we'll get there," Elledge said of an extension. "It's hard. When you start talking about the piece of ownership for Dale in DEI, that's part of my business, too. That's part of [half-brother] Kerry's business. That's part of [half-sister] Taylor's business…"There's a whole lot of dynamics that play into it all. You've got a new guy on board who's trying to get the ship turned in the right direction (referring to Max Seigel, President of DEI), and you still have Teresa there who's trusting this new person, and she's not had anybody in there for a while and things have kind of fell down. So there's a rebuilding going on. It's a bad time to try to renegotiate a contract. You've got the old still sticking there, and this new on the horizon that could be really good, and you're trying to make sense of it all. We'll see if we can get there."
I’m not sure how that turned into the days’ agenda, but it seemed to crop up on all the racing shows I tuned into. So I was half ignoring the conversation that was taking place on NASCAR Raceday. Now I realize that this is a live show, and that is part of its charm. I like the show, and will continue to watch it. But I’m going to suggest the panel of hosts look at a book of ethics on occasion, especially our friend Jimmy Spencer. My ears heard Jimmy say:
"The thing is that Teresa Earnhardt gave Dale Jr. his opportunity to race. She's the one that told Dale, her husband, Sr., let's give him a shot. Kelly Earnhardt Elledge, I'm shocked she kept her middle name. I mean you're married, you know, why keep Earnhardt? I think her ego is so big, I think she's backing Teresa and Max in corners. She's not a good negotiator. I think she… if she worked for anybody else they'd probably fire her. But because she's working for Dale Jr. and it's his sister, I think that she's using ego to control this direction. And I think that Dale needs to be careful about that, because that Dale, if he makes the decision to leave DEI, there's a lot of true Dale Earnhardt Sr. fans that will lose respect for Dale Jr. That's the one thing that Dale Sr… I don't think Dale Jr. needs to leave the organization. I think there's more to it. I think Max Siegel is a heck of a negotiator, but the thing is I don't like what Kelley is doing, putting them in corners."
Hmmm…excuse me Mr. Spencer, but there are times when one should think before speaking. And in this incident, speaking might have been the last choice you should have made.
Sure, free speech and live TV always produce a hiccup now and then, but it’s not like Jimmy is new to this gig you know? He’s pretty much a veteran of running his mouth before and after the races. And most of us fans take it with a grain of salt…we love him one day and wonder what rock he crawled out from under the next. And yes, I realize we all have our moments, and most people can say that about all of us once in awhile I guess. But on national TV?
Who is Jimmy to say Elledge isn’t a good negotiator anyway? Has he been in those endless meetings that she has endured? I think not. And the bit about including her maiden name in her married name…uh…take a look Spencer, there a millions of women out there that do that now days. And backing people into a corner? Hmmm…I am pretty sure Teresa and Max can handle themselves pretty well in one of those meeting rooms, and you sure won’t find them in a corner trying to figure out what to do.
Well, I could go on and on, but my point has been made. That old adage that my mother and teacher and whoever else through the years has fired off... “Think before you speak” is so dog gone true. I think I’ll get a tee shirt made for Spencer with those words on there.
But for now, I find myself sitting here wondering if Dale Earnhardt, Jr. happened to hear that lovely monologue of Spencer’s. Wouldn’t you just love to be a fly on the wall the next time their eyes meet? If Jr. is anything like his Dad, and in this instance I hope he is, that’s all it will take…a stare from his eyes as he casually walks by Spencer the next time will hold all the words necessary to make Jimmy squirm just enough. Whether words will be spoken or not will be something we will probably never know. And that’s a good thing…because if someone had insulted my family member the way Spencer has Kelley, the things coming out of my mouth would not exactly be printable.
