LEGENDS RACING
Edwards, Pearson Turns Laps Together at Darlington
CSD Staff, April 16

NASCAR’s Carl Edwards, who some say is making his own legend in the sport spent time Wednesday with one of NASCAR’s biggest legends, David Pearson.

A three-time winner in 2008, Edwards was at Darlington Raceway helping track officials promote next month's Dodge Avenger 500. Pearson got in on the act by getting behind the wheel of a 1971 Mercury Cyclone that had been on display at the Darlington Raceway Museum and had not been cranked up in 33 years to turn laps at the track where he has 10 wins.

Leonard Wood of the Wood Brothers, Pearson’s former boss, was able to restore the car to running condition.

Edwards in one of his teams show cars turned five laps with Pearson on the track. The 73-year-old Pearson, who retired in 1986, ‘passed’ Edwards to ‘win’ the five-lap exhibition race.

"It was great to get back out on the track at Darlington Raceway and get my 11th win here," Pearson said. "I have been looking forward to this day for a long time."

Edwards, who flew Pearson to Darlington in his plane, treated the event as a learning experience for the Dodge Challenger 500 on May 10. During the flight, he listened to old stories and pointers from Pearson.

Pearson’s advice has helped drivers like Ricky Craven, who edged Kurt Busch in the 2003 Carolina Dodge Dealers 500. When Craven first came to Darlington in the early 1990s, Pearson took him around the track in a van.

“I learned some tricks, hopefully,” Edwards said. “But I’m glad and honored just to be out there on the same track as David Pearson.

“I made sure I got a good look out my driver’s-side window to see him passing me in the No. 21 car. That’s a piece of history and a moment I will never forget.”
