SOUTH OF THE BORDER
Pruett, road racing aces lead charge into Mexico
By Amanda Brahler,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service , April 17

Scott Pruett won the pole at last year's Nationwide Series race in Mexico City and was in good position to drive away with the win -- that is, until Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Juan Pablo Montoya put a fender to him with less eight laps remaining and sent him spinning. While Pruett vented after a fifth-place finish, Montoya celebrated his first NASCAR win.

This time around, Montoya won't be able to get in the way when Pruett straps into the No. 40 Dodge for Sunday's Corona Mexico 200 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Montoya's not in the race.

"(I'm) looking forward to big things," Pruett said. "We did finish fifth last year. It was very controversial. It was the talk of the town for the week afterwards. I think it's a little bit more personal with what happened last year and it's also a little bit more personal with the fact of this long-standing relationship with Mexico. For me personally, it would be huge. I'm excited to get down there and see if we can win that race."

Pruett will be joined by other road racing specialists, including Michel Jourdain (Braun Racing), Max Papis (Rusty Wallace Racing), Boris Said (Team Rensi Motorsports) and Adrian Fernandez (JR Motorsports), a native of Mexico City.

While some teams are tabbing road course specialists as weekend replacements, others are sticking with their full-time Nationwide Series drivers. Of those full-time drivers, Marcos Ambrose will have an edge as he tries to get his first Nationwide win. A two-time V8 Supercar champion in his native Australia, Ambrose finished eighth in last year's race at Mexico City and also came in seventh at the road course in Montreal last season.

"I'm really excited to be road racing again, just for the fact that we're going to be OK, and we can turn our season around," Ambrose said. "We've had a really good buildup but we haven't had any stand-up performances yet, so I'm hoping Mexico is going to be it."

NASCAR Number
By Bill Marx, The Sporting News,April 18

Today's NASCAR Number is this week's Daily Double.

4.17: Distance in miles of the longest lap in a NASCAR race, recorded in the 1950 race on the Beach & Road Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Ten races were on the Beach & Road Course (1949-58), and the 1950 race was the only one in which the course layout was 4.17 miles. The first race was 4.15 miles and the last eight were 4.1 miles. The 1950 race was 48 laps, 200.2 miles, and Harold Kite won in a 1949 Lincoln.

2.518: Distance in miles of one lap on Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, site of Sunday's Nationwide Series race. That makes the Mexico City track the ninth-longest track/course to be used in a NASCAR race.
