NO FAULT
Earnhardt doesn’t think Busch wrecked him on purpose
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, May 9

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- After watching videotape of the wreck that knocked him out of victory lane last Saturday at Richmond, Dale Earnhardt could sum up his verdict in two words: “avoidable” and “unintentional.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. says racing at Darlington Raceway will be interesting with new pavement

On Lap 398 of the Dan Lowry 400, Earnhardt and Kyle Busch barreled into Turn 3 side by side, battling for the lead. Busch slid up the track into Earnhardt, spinning the No. 88 Chevrolet. Earnhardt recovered to finish 15th, while Busch held second behind opportunistic Clint Bowyer.

Earnhardt said watching the replay didn’t make the situation better, but he gave a frank assessment of the wreck after Thursday's first practice session at Darlington Raceway in preparation for Saturday night’s Dodge Challenger 500.

“It was hard racing,” Earnhardt said. “It’s avoidable, but I went in the corner ... I blew Turns 1 and 2 real bad. I pushed way up the track, and he saw that, and he almost had me cleared off 2. I got back beside him there on the straightaway. I had a pretty good run.

“I went in the corner -- I didn’t go in there as high as I had been running -- I went about a half-car-length lower, and I think he was anticipating me going in where I’d been running. I anticipated him going in on the bottom, because he’d been running real tight on the apron. We ran into each other.

“A lot of people thought it was intentional. I don’t think it was.”

Despite the disappointment of seeing his winless streak extend to 72 races, Earnhardt thinks that a rivalry is good for NASCAR Sprint Cup racing.

DARLINGTON, S.C. --Bill Elliott, who hasn’t raced at Darlington since 2003, hardly recognized Darlington Raceway when he showed up to practice the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford on Thursday.

All he can do is watch
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, May 9

DARLINGTON, S.C. --Clearly favoring his broken left ankle, Dario Franchitti climbed -- gingerly -- up a flight of stairs to an observation platform to watch Sterling Marlin take practice laps in the No. 40 Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge. Franchitti sustained the injury in a Nationwide Series wreck at Talladega two weeks ago, and his return date to the No. 40 is yet to be determined.
