Earnhardt doesn’t think Busch wrecked him on purpose Posted:0535hrs By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DARLINGTON, S.C. -- After watching videotape of the wreck that knocked him out of victory lane last Saturday at Richmond, Dale Earnhardt could sum up his verdict in two words: “avoidable” and “unintentional.”
On Lap 398 of the Dan Lowry 400, Earnhardt and Kyle Busch barreled into Turn 3 side by side, battling for the lead. Busch slid up the track into Earnhardt, spinning the No. 88 Chevrolet. Earnhardt recovered to finish 15th, while Busch held second behind opportunistic Clint Bowyer. Earnhardt said watching the replay didn’t make the situation better, but he gave a frank assessment of the wreck after Thursday's first practice session at Darlington Raceway in preparation for Saturday night’s Dodge Challenger 500. “It was hard racing,” Earnhardt said. “It’s avoidable, but I went in the corner ... I blew Turns 1 and 2 real bad. I pushed way up the track, and he saw that, and he almost had me cleared off 2. I got back beside him there on the straightaway. I had a pretty good run. “I went in the corner -- I didn’t go in there as high as I had been running -- I went about a half-car-length lower, and I think he was anticipating me going in where I’d been running. I anticipated him going in on the bottom, because he’d been running real tight on the apron. We ran into each other. “A lot of people thought it was intentional. I don’t think it was.” Despite the disappointment of seeing his winless streak extend to 72 races, Earnhardt thinks that a rivalry is good for NASCAR Sprint Cup racing. --(Cont'd From Front Page)--
“He’s an amazing racecar driver with a lot talent,” Earnhardt said of Busch. “It’s good to have rivalries. He’s going to be the guy to beat, which I think he is right now. Everybody’s going to be watching his lap times and watching how fast he runs and stuff. When you’re doing so good, there’s a bit of a bull's-eye on you when you’re out there, but I think he knows that.”
Earnhardt said that some of the comparisons being made between Busch and his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., might be justified when it comes to aggressiveness on the racetrack but not when it comes to temperament.
“Personality-wise, they’re polar opposites,” Earnhardt said of the comparison between the brash, outspoken Busch and his more taciturn father. “Give me a break. You knew my dad better than that.”
Busch was fastest in Thursday’s first Cup practice with a lap at 175.522 mph. Earnhardt was third quickest at 174.780 mph.
