It's time to earn your racing stripes

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Saturday night's race at Darlington began one of the most challenging stretches of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, a succession of races that will test the versatility and adaptability of drivers and crews alike.

Dodge Challenger 500 Wrap-Up

Darlington Results

Next up is the 600-mile marathon at 1.5-mile Lowe's Motor Speedway on May 25, which is followed by visits on successive weekends to a one-mile, high-banked concrete track (Dover); a triangular 2.5-miler with three quirky corners (Pocono); a fast two-mile speedway with multiple racing grooves (Michigan); a 1.99-mile road course (Infineon); a one-mile flat track (New Hampshire); and a 2.5-mile restrictor-plate superspeedway (Daytona) before the drivers return to another intermediate track July 12 at Chicagoland.

Saturday night's Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington has provided some telling clues as to who might be ready for the challenge -- and who might not.

10 feet tall and bulletproof

Kyle Busch shows no signs of slowing down. A SAFER barrier certainly can't stop him, and the way he's feeling, a brick wall probably wouldn't be any more effective.

Busch picked up his third win of the season at Darlington, tying him with Carl Edwards for the series lead. Two things to remember: 1) after 26 races, the Chase for the Sprint Cup is seeded according to the number of wins, and 2) Edwards lost the 10-point bonus for his Las Vegas victory because of an oil tank cover violation.

NASCAR At Darlington

Remembering Adam: a Legacy Beyond the Track
By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, May 12

It was eight years ago Monday that one of NASCAR’s most famous families lost their hope for the future, a mother and father lost a son and NASCAR fans lost a driver with the potential to become a superstar.

Tony Stewart’s attempt to sweep the weekends races at Darlington ended almost before it began Saturday night.

Polesitter Greg Biffle led seven times for 95 laps Saturday night at Darlington and dominated during the early part of the race.

Look for an announcement this week that Bobby Labonte has signed an agreement to remain at Petty Enterprises after 2008.

Monkey Behind the Wheel?
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, May 11

Carl Edwards has heard enough about the positioning of the rear-end housing on his No. 99 Ford. Other drivers have noticed that Edwards' car has a different attitude as it circles the track, specifically that it's more "yawed out" than other cars, giving the appearance that the rear end is sliding out.

2: Craftsman Truck Series champions who have won races in the Cup series. Greg Biffle, the 2000 champion has 12 wins; Bobby Hamilton, the 2004 champion, had four. The Craftsman Truck Series began in 1995, and nine drivers have won championships (Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday Jr. have won three each). Biffle and Travis Kvapil were the only truck champions in Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Darlington. Biffle won the pole but finished 43rd; Kvapil finished eighth.
