DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Saturday night's race at Darlington began one of the most challenging stretches of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, a succession of races that will test the versatility and adaptability of drivers and crews alike.
Next up is the 600-mile marathon at 1.5-mile Lowe's Motor Speedway on May 25, which is followed by visits on successive weekends to a one-mile, high-banked concrete track (Dover); a triangular 2.5-miler with three quirky corners (Pocono); a fast two-mile speedway with multiple racing grooves (Michigan); a 1.99-mile road course (Infineon); a one-mile flat track (New Hampshire); and a 2.5-mile restrictor-plate superspeedway (Daytona) before the drivers return to another intermediate track July 12 at Chicagoland.
Saturday night's Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington has provided some telling clues as to who might be ready for the challenge -- and who might not.
10 feet tall and bulletproof
Kyle Busch shows no signs of slowing down. A SAFER barrier certainly can't stop him, and the way he's feeling, a brick wall probably wouldn't be any more effective.
Busch picked up his third win of the season at Darlington, tying him with Carl Edwards for the series lead. Two things to remember: 1) after 26 races, the Chase for the Sprint Cup is seeded according to the number of wins, and 2) Edwards lost the 10-point bonus for his Las Vegas victory because of an oil tank cover violation.
