ONE MORE SHOT
Martin Heads To Hendrick
By Greg Engle,Cup Scene Daily, July 2

DAYTONA BEACH FL. -- Mark Martin wants one more shot at a title.

Veteran driver Mark Martin will announce his intentions to campaign the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy full time in 2009 at a press conference scheduled by Hendrick Motorsports at Daytona International Speedway Friday.

Martin,49, has finished in the top five in the Cup point standings 12 times in his career stretching back to 1981. He will now compete in one final full season in an effort to gain an all-elusive title. Hendrick teams have won Cup series titles in seven of the last 13 years.

Martin had announced in 2005 that he would be retiring from full time competition after 2006, but when a driver couldn’t be found to replace him raced in 2006 for Roush Racing.

Because of sponsor conflicts at Roush, Martin stunned the NASCAR world when he announced in October 2006 that he would split time with Regan Smith at Ginn Racing in 2007. Then in July 2007 Dale Earnhardt Incorporated acquired Ginn and Martin. He is scheduled to race 24 times this season splitting seat time with Aric Almirola.

While Martin hasn’t raced in the Cup series for Hendrick, he has competed five times in the Nationwide Series using Hendrick equipment; three for Hendrick and twice for JR Motorsports the team owned by Hendrick driver Dale Earnhardt Junior that uses Hendrick equipment. The seed for the move to full time competition for Hendrick may have been planted win Martin won a Nationwide Series race for JR Motorsports at Las Vegas in March.
