Stewart has been granted a release from his contract that ran through 2009 and will finish out the season with Gibbs before starting his own venture in 2009.

The release most likely occurred this past weekend, however the announcement came Wednesday.

It’s widely believed that Stewart will become either a full or part owner of HAAS-CNC Racing.

The reasons for the ownership appear to be twofold. Stewart wants to be in control of his own destiny and he has a strong desire to renew his partnership with Chevrolet. Gibbs began racing Toyota at the beginning of 2008, Stewart who already owns a World Of Outlaws Team, campaigns Chevy’s in that series.

The team currently receives chassis and engines from Hendrick Motorsports.

HAAS-CNC Owner Gene Haas recently began serving a two-year prison sentence for tax fraud charges. The team currently fields two cars, one with driver Scott Riggs the other has been piloted by several drivers.
