This Bud Could Be for Evernham

Ray Evernham and his teams rolled into Watkins Glen this weekend for the first time since announcing the formation of Gillett Evernham Motorsports (GEM).

George Gillett and Evernham finally completed the partnership this past week and the teams will be racing under the GEM banner for the first time this weekend.

Evernham hopes that Gillett, the owner of several other sports teams, will bring a fresh start for his struggling teams in addition of much needed cash.

"It will allow me to concentrate on the competition side and allow us to be in touch with other professional sports and sports marketing programs across the world that we would never had access to,” Evernham said.

Evernham who founded his team in 2000 has watched his cars struggle this season and hopes that turning over the business side of the organization will allow them to become more competitive.

"As the sport changes, the job gets bigger,” Evernham said. “Sometimes you have to have help and my goal is to win the championship. On my own, I was not going to be able to do it on my own. It was a perfect opportunity and George (Gillett) can open doors that I cannot open. Also, I can focus on the competition side."

One of the doors that my have been opened further for the new GEM organization may be that of Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser.

Budweiser was the long time sponsor of Dale Earnhardt Junior at Dale Earnhardt Incorporated but when Earnhardt announced his departure at the end of this season to head to Hendrick Motorsports, Bud decided not to follow; some say one reason could be due to a contract Hendrick has in place with PepsiCo and the amount of money that Anheuser-Busch would have been forced to pay to follow Earnhardt Junior.

--(Cont'd From Front Page)-- According to some near the talks, Bud will sign as a primary sponsor for the No. 9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne at Evernham within weeks. The biggest hurdle seems to have been the sponsor’s hesitation to commit due to the lack of performance of the Evernham teams this year.

However the new partnership with Gillett and the renewed optimism it brings Anheuser-Busch is ready to commit and move forward.

Mike Delahanty, senior manager of the Dodge Motorsports program recently confirmed that both the No. 9 and No. 19 Dodge’s will look different next season without confirming that Dodge will change from a primary to an associate sponsor in 2008.

Evernham himself would not name his new sponsor but did say Friday at Watkins Glen but did say the new deal could happen in the next few weeks.

“Right now it still looks like we're shooting for the next two or three weeks to be able to talk about where we're headed with sponsorship,” Evernham said. “But you don't know if that could turn into five or six weeks with one swipe of the pen."
