Yeley confirms Gibbs exit; will his next home be Bill Davis or Yates?

Friday at Watkins Glen, JJ Yeley confirmed he is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of the year, opening up the No. 18 seat for Kyle Busch for next year.

"I have a lot of good opportunities in store for me,” Yeley said. “I don't have a date set on when I'm going to announce what I'm doing but I have talked to several different teams.”

Yeley has been driving for Gibbs since 2004, and has gone winless since then. His performance has not been anywhere near teammates Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin and Yeley said that there were never any talks about renewing his contract, which expires at the end of this year.

"I've had a couple discussion with J.D. (JGR president J.D. Gibbs) Yeley said. “I'm at the end of my contract here so it's not a matter of being replaced or being fired, it's just a matter of we've been in negotiations trying to figure out what it's going to take to make this team run better."

Speculation on a new home for Yeley seems to have fallen to two teams; Bill Davis Racing who removed driver Jeremy Mayfield from one of their Toyota’s just this past week or the new team of Robert Yates Newman Haas Racing.

--(Cont'd From Front Page)-- Yates could be preparing to add a third Ford to their stable or looking for a replacement for driver Ricky Rudd who reportedly would like to return to the sidelines after a less than stellar season to date. Rudd had stepped away from full time competition before being persuaded by Yates to return.

Yeley would not name a particular team Friday but did express optimism for the future.

"I can assure you that all the teams I'm talking to are all top-quality teams that want to make me a championship-caliber driver,” Yeley said. They want to put an effort behind me that we can go win races. That's what I'm excited about."
