Ricky Rudd’s announcement this past weekend that he will depart from Robert Yates Racing at the end of the 2007 season has opened the door for JJ Yeley to take over the No. 88 Ford in 2008.

Rudd will make his 898th start in Monday’s rescheduled 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway, second on the all time list to Richard Petty.

His storied career began in 1975 at Rockingham where he finished 11th. Currently Rudd as 23 career wins. Rudd is perhaps best known for his streak of 788 consecutive starts between 1988 and 2001. He also had a 16-year stretch where he won at least one race.

Rudd opted to sit out the 2006 season and was persuaded to return to a full time ride by Yates after Dale Jarrett left for the Toyota team owned by Michael Waltrip. Rudd said that he has no plans to run a part time schedule next season but said he’s open to anything.

JJ Yeley was recently released from the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevy to make room for Kyle Busch in 2008.

A team source at the newly formed Yates/Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing Racing confirms that ‘all signs point’ to Yeley as their choice to take over the No. 88 Ford.

--(Cont'd From Front Page)-- Since his Nextel Cup debut in 2004 Yeley, a former Silver Crown champion, has one top five and four top-10 finishes in 64 Cup series starts all with Gibbs Racing.

Yeley will join teammate David Gilliland. Sponsorship is still in doubt for both teams as the status of M&M Mars is in doubt beyond 2007; the sponsorship is split between the two cars.
