DRIVE FOR FIVE
Gordon holds off Bowyer for Charlotte win
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, October 14

CONCORD, N.C. -- As the "regular season" went, so goes the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup.

In a green-white-checkered-flag finish Saturday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon pulled away from Clint Bowyer to win the Bank of America 500, and in doing so, he began to pull away from the rest of the Chase field.

Gordon had opened a lead of more than 300 points before the numbers were reset for the Chase after the 26th race of the season, at Richmond. With his second straight victory, his sixth of the season and the 81st of his career, Gordon began to distance himself from his rivals, leading Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson by 68 points and Bowyer by 78 with five races left in the season.

Asked whether Gordon was now the man to beat for the Cup title, Bowyer said simply, "Jeff's been the guy to beat all year long."

Chase drivers claimed the top five positions at LMS, but third-place finisher Kyle Busch isn't within realistic striking distance of Gordon at 280 points back. Neither are Jeff Burton and Carl Edwards, who ran fourth and fifth Saturday and are 366 and 240 points behind Gordon, respectively.

Battling a fuel pickup problem that jeopardized his performance on restarts at the end of the race, Gordon still crossed the finish line .579 seconds ahead of Bowyer in a race that went three laps beyond its posted distance of 334 laps. On the final restart on Lap 336, Gordon spun his tires, but Bowyer was unable to capitalize.

"On that last restart, I spun the wheels so bad that I thought Clint Bowyer could have gotten by me," Gordon said. "But he gave me a big shot in the rear, and that kind of got me going again."

Bowyer was closing in on Gordon right after the green flag was displayed but couldn't make the pass.

"It was like he grabbed second gear right there," Bowyer said. "I think about that time he shifted and didn't give me enough room to dart down low. That was going to be my only shot. I was way too tight there at the end."

It's all but over

CONCORD, N.C. --That's it. I surrender. I'm waving the white, err, rainbow flag.

As much as I've said all season that Tony Stewart would be this year's Nextel Cup champion, I'm now convinced that even with five races still remaining, Jeff Gordon will not be denied in his bid for a fifth Cup championship.

It's his to win – and only his.

His won't-be-beat mindset, the almost osmotic relationship with crew chief Steve Letarte and the don't-quit attitude that has permeated throughout the No. 24 team all season long leaves no doubt that Gordon cannot be stopped.

Sure, Gordon's teammate Jimmie Johnson is still just 68 points behind Gordon and Clint Bowyer is 78 back.

But it's over.

Stanley Ray Cooper, 53, a longtime reporter and manufacturer representative in NASCAR, passed away Saturday morning following a brief illness.

Mr. Cooper was born in Inman, S.C., and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1976. He worked 12 years as a sports reporter at the Greensboro News and Observer before becoming the first manufacturer media representative for Chevrolet in NASCAR.

Mr. Cooper joined Dodge Motorsports in 2001 and worked as its manufacturing representative.

He recently was honored with the Pocono Spirit Award by the NMPA.

Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Clarence Cooper. He is survived by his wife, Chris; his son, Andrew; his daughter, Katy; and his mother, Evelyn White Cooper. Kurt Busch drives with a heavy heart
By Lee Spencer, FoxSports.com,October 14

There was no driver more disappointed following the Bank of America 500 than Kurt Busch, who wanted to win the race in order to dedicate it to the memory of his friend Ray Cooper, the long-time reporter and Dodge manufacturer's representative that passed away on Saturday after a bout with cancer.

Cooper, 52, covered 467 consecutive races. He earned Joe Littlejohn Award and the George Cunningham Awards from the National Motorsports Press Association for his excellence in motorsports reporting and was friend to all in the garage.

Busch led 13 laps before he advised the team of dropping a cylinder on Lap 272. He would end up finishing 26th on the night.

"We had a really fast car tonight," said crew chief Pat Tryson. "We got the damage fixed from the incident on pit road and were running .90 seconds faster than the leaders when we dropped a cylinder. We'll just get after them again next week."

Stewart makes case for new Chase scoring system
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, October 14

CONCORD, N.C.-- If two-time champion Tony Stewart has a gripe with the way the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup is scored, it involves the other drivers on the track who are not competing for the title.

"You've got 31 other guys that can dictate who wins the championship and who doesn't -- literally, by those 31 guys," said Stewart, who appeared at the Lowe's Motor Speedway media center Friday to unveil the Armor All-sponsored Nationwide Series car he'll race at Daytona in February. "We need to have our own point structure where it's first through 12th for us every week.

"We're not racing those other guys for points anyway, so why should they be dictating where we're at amongst each other? If you've got five guys in between two Chase guys, it shouldn't matter -- especially if three of them are teammates of one guy that's in the Chase, and that guy lets three of them go to protect this guy's spot. That's the only thing I really don't like about our Chase rules."

Rapper who Starred in Chevy Commercial with Earnhardt Arrested
October 14

Clifford Harris, better known as Grammy award-winning rapper T.I., was arrested in Atlanta Saturday. He was charged with possessing unregistered machine guns and silencers.

The rapper, who as a representative for Chevrolet appeared in a television commercial recently with Dale Earnhardt Junior, was taken into custody just hours before he was set to perform at the BET Hip Hop Awards in downtown Atlanta.

A federal search warrant was executed at Harris' home Saturday afternoon and special agents with the ATF spent most of the afternoon at the residence, located about 15 miles southwest of the city.

By 7:30 p.m. Saturday, federal agents had already spent more than four hours at Harris' home collecting boxes and bags of evidence. Investigators said they found six firearms in Harris' bedroom closet.

The U.S. Attorney said Harris should not possess any firearms because he was convicted on felony drug charges in 1998.

This Day in NASCAR History

1951: Marvin Burke writes his way into the record books by winning the only Grand National/Cup race he runs. Burke wins a 400-lap event on the .625-mile dirt track at Oakland Stadium in Oakland, Calif. He leads 156 laps and closes out his Grand National career batting 1.000, giving him the best winning percentage in Grand National/Cup history.
