Quote of the Day:

“Guys can get caught up in wrecks, engines can blow, parts can fail and tires can blow. If you could possibly figure out that those things were not going to happen, then I would. But I think anybody that's mathematically in it still has a shot. ”
- Jeff Gordon

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
Pollock set to Buy Bill Davis Racing
By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, October 23

Craig Pollock, Jacques Villeneuve’s long time manager, will announce possibly as early as this week that he has become part or full owner of Bill Davis Racing.

 Craig Pollock(L),Jacques Villeneuve (R)
The team currently fields two cars in Cup and three in the Craftsman Truck Series and Villeneuve is expected to race one of the cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup next year.

Pollock’s foray into ownership of a race team will not be his first. In 1998 Pollock purchased Tyrrell, renaming it British American Racing (BAR), and signed Villeneuve as the driver. Pollock secured sponsorship for the team from British American Tobacco. After the team was formed, Pollock became somewhat of a controversial figure after he made abundant claims about how successful his team would be.

Those boasts proved groundless however and the team never really got out of the gate in 1999. By 2001, sponsor pressure led to Pollock being replaced, although he remained with the team in a limited capacity until 2004.

In 2003, Pollock formed CART team PK Racing, with businessman Kevin Kalkhoven. He remained as co-owner of that team until 2004.

This past weekend at Martinsville Pollock remained aloof on the subject of the buyout.

"I'm interested in having an active participation in a NASCAR team, preferably the one where Jacques drives," said Pollock. "It's the best way to make sure that my driver has access to the best equipment available."

"Every scenario has been examined, and this, with a lot of teams. We talked about partial buyouts, complete buyouts, set up of a new independent team, and multiple opportunities for a satellite team that would benefit from the expertise of an existing team.

"We talked to Roush, Evernham, Childress and, of course, Bill Davis."

Speculation is rampant however that the buyout is a done deal and the announcement will be soon. The only question that remains is if the purchase is a partnership or full buyout.

Franchitti to make Busch debut at Memphis
By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, October 23

Dario Franchitti will make his NASCAR Busch Series debut at Memphis Motorsports Park this Saturday as he continues the transition to his first full season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2008.

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates will announce Monday day that the current IRL IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500 champion will drive the No. 42 Dodge in the Sam's Town 250.

Franchitti will make his third stock car race start at the 0.75-mile oval where nearly a year ago Juan Pablo Montoya made his NASCAR debut for Chip Ganassi Racing and took a respectable 11th place finish.

Franchitti will have a guaranteed start because the car, which was driven by Montoya in 17 races this year, is in the top 30 in the Busch Series owners' standings.

Franchitti debuted in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway last week.

He qualified 30th for his first official NASCAR race, and for a time ran in the top-20 on the lead lap and was as high as 15th. He was involved in an incident just past the halfway point and was eventually forced to retire early. He was officially scored in 33rd.

Mayfield replaces Green effective immediately
By Reid Spencer, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 23

With the recent hiring of Scott Riggs to drive for Haas CNC Racing in 2008, the question became: Which of Haas CNC’s current drivers — Jeff Green or Johnny Sauter — would remain with the team next year?

Given that Haas CNC announced Monday the signing of Jeremy Mayfield, the answer is probably “neither.”

Team general manager Joe Custer confirmed Mayfield will replace Green in the No. 66 Chevrolet, effectively immediately. The hiring of Mayfield, coupled with the earlier signing of Riggs, also means Sauter almost certainly won’t have a ride with Hass CNC next year.

Asked why Haas CNC chose Mayfield, 38, Custer said, “Performance. He’s got a great record. He’s made the Chase (for the NASCAR Nextel Cup) two of the last four years.”

Custer said the team made the move now to get a head start on the 2008 season with Mayfield already on board.

Skinner, Benson to replace Mayfield
October 23

Following Jeremy Mayfield's departure from Bill Davis Racing (BDR) to drive for Haas CNC, Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson have been announced as his replacement in the No. 36 Toyota Camry for the balance of the season.

Skinner, who currently leads the championship in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in his BDR Toyota Tundra, will drive the No. 36 Camry this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway and again in two weeks time at Texas Motor Speedway.

Meanwhile Benson, who drives the No. 23 Toyota Tundra for BDR in the Truck Series, will take over from Skinner in the last two races of the Nextel Cup season, beginning at Phoenix International Raceway and finishing it out at Homestead.

"We wish Jeremy Mayfield the best of luck on his future endeavors," said team owner Bill Davis. "We appreciate the job he did for us this season and are glad he and Shana were a part of the Bill Davis Racing family.

"Jeremy is a very talented race-car driver and we all wish him nothing but success with Haas CNC Racing.

"Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson are seasoned veterans of the Nextel Cup Series and we are hopeful the skills and knowledge they both have acquired throughout their racing careers will help us to work toward getting the No. 36 team back on track for the reminder of this season and beyond."

Both Skinner and Benson will face the same situation that Mayfield went through until last weekend at Martinsville, having to qualify on time for the remaining four races.

Mayfield only qualified for 17 out of 32 races in the car, which is currently ranked 46th in the owner standings.

NASCAR attendance lagging
Close points standings could bring Nextel Cup fans back to seats
By Mark DeCotis,Florida Today,October 23

Reflections from the recliner on the racing weekend that was:

Has the Martinsville race ended yet?

Twenty-one caution flags for 126-of-500 laps drew out the Nextel Cup race for 15 seconds short of four hours. And for those of us unlucky enough to be planted in front of the plastic-fantastic lover (thanks, Jefferson Airplane), that equated to 189 minutes of televised racing, and 68-mind numbing minutes for 152 commercials (thanks CawsnJaws.com).

As I've written 100 times before, and will write 100 times more: Oh pay-per-view, where art thou?

Racing writer Glick a true inspiration
By Louis Brewster, San Bernardino Sun,October 23

Random thoughts for a Tuesday morning, wondering how we can help those who will wake up this morning without a home because of the wildfires.

A little more than a year ago, without much fanfare, there was a historic event at the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at California Speedway. It wasn't one of those occasions we celebrated for there was a missing element.

The View From Fanville
Perfection…a Dangerous Label Even for Carl Edwards
By Amy Hair,Senior columnist,Cup Scene Daily,October 23

Be careful who you hold accountable to “perfection”.

Sometimes when we put our fellows up on their racing pedestals, we shove other things up there with them. We take a good measure of tolerance, a barrel full of patience and an extra pocketful of the ability to handle bad press and gossip and heave it up there on our guy’s shoulders and hope they can keep their balance as we nitpick their actions apart week after week. And just for the heck of it, we make them wear a hat full of perfection.

This Day in NASCAR History
By Bill Marx, The Sporting News,October 23

1977: Donnie Allison wins the American 500 at Rockingham, leading 374 laps. It is the most laps he leads in his 242 Cup races over 20 seasons.
