Quote of the Day:

“I have to prove my worthiness, just like they do. In my opinion I am a championship driver, and just because I had some bad luck this year doesn't mean I should change the way I race guys that are going for the Cup. ”

Edwards talks about pit road shove at Martinsville
By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily, October 24

Carl Edwards apologized Tuesday for a very public post race confrontation with teammate Matt Kenseth following last Sunday’s Nextel Cup event at Martinsville.

The entire incident was captured on tape as a reporter began to interview Kenseth following the race. Edwards suddenly appeared, approached Kenseth and pushed him on the pit wall. The teammates were then seen talking before Edwards raised a fist and Kenseth flinched. Edwards then walked away.

"I was definitely wrong for showing my anger and putting on an aggressive display towards Matt after the race," Edwards said. "I want to apologize to my fans and everyone -- That was definitely the wrong thing to do."

Edwards said that frustration from a long day might have helped trigger the incident. His No. 99 Ford suffered alternator failure around lap 185, forcing him to conserve battery voltage and turn off all fans, Edwards faced am uphill battle keeping the scorching rotors cool without the fans.

"I went down in the corner, and I had all my fans off," Edwards explained. "I couldn't get the car stopped like I planned [to]. I hit him in the door in turn 1. We went down in turn 3 and he pile-dived me so hard in the rear end that I barely saved it."

Edwards recovered and finished 11th place, keeping his fifth place position in the Chase for the Nextel Cup Standings. But as he exited the track, he ran into Kenseth.

"I was walking out [of the track] thinking about how frustrated I was," Edwards said. "I then look up and right there in front of me is Matt Kenseth standing there. I don't remember what he said or even if he looked at me wrong."

Edwards said that he had left a message for Kenseth on Monday, but it had not been returned by midday Tuesday, Edwards said. Kenseth, the 2003 series champion, refused to be interviewed about the incident, a team publicist said.

According to Edwards, his anger towards his teammate didn’t just stem from Sunday’s race but had been building over the last few months.

"What led up to the deal that happened after the race of me confronting Matt, it was not a one-day deal," Edwards said. "It wasn't just Sunday's on-track incident where I bumped into Matt and he bumped into me harder and I got madder all day."

The two also exchanged fenders during the Kansas Busch race several weeks ago. At the time Edwards blamed Kenseth for an accident that ended Edwards day.

Merchandise power Motorsports Authentics takes action to cut losses
By Michael Smith,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, October 24

Merchandise power Motorsports Authentics, reeling from losses that could reach $40 million to $50 million this year, is cutting costs and desperately trying to figure out what happened to a market that was delivering profits not so long ago.

During a season of musical chairs by NASCAR drivers and sponsors, which officials say contributed to poor sales and canceled orders, the shelves at Motorsports Authentics have filled with nearly $25 million in unsold inventory that likely will have to be donated to charity or disposed.

In addition to the inventory losses, MA is on pace to record operating losses of $20 million to $25 million this year, up from the $15 million to $20 million estimated in July. The latest figures were revealed in a third-quarter earnings report by International Speedway Corp., a 50-50 owner with Speedway Motorsports Inc.

“That’s how you go from a disappointing year to a disaster,” said Bob Simonson, a financial analyst at William Blair & Co. who has covered motorsports since 1999. “We’re seeing that this is a bigger task than we thought” to turn the company around.

Richert out as Vickers’ crew chief
By Reid Spencer, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 24

Team Red Bull has parted ways with Doug Richert, crew chief for Brian Vickers’ No. 83 Toyota, the team announced Tuesday.

Randy Cox, Team Red Bull’s research and development manager, will take over as crew chief for Vickers, currently 39th in the NASCAR Nextel Cup points standings, starting this weekend at Atlanta.

Vickers has failed to qualify for the past two Cup races, at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and Martinsville, and has missed three of the past four.

“In any NASCAR Nextel Cup Series organization, the crew chief and driver are the two key forces that make a race team competitive, and there must be a balance in both personalities and methods for achieving goals,” Red Bull competition director Elton Sawyer said in a statement released by the team.

“Individually, each person can be strong at their job, but if they aren’t efficient collectively, then changes must be made so both sides can reach their optimum potential. The formula we’d put together to try and make the No. 83 team successful was no longer working, so it was an amicable decision to part ways.”

Richert, 47, won a series-best six races with Greg Biffle in 2005. At age 20 in 1980, his rookie year, Richert became the youngest crew chief in history to win a Cup championship when he helped Dale Earnhardt to the title.

Cox also had early success, winning with Jamie McMurray at Rockingham in 2004 in his debut as a Busch Series crew chief. Cox has also served as crew chief for David Stremme and Kenny Wallace in the Busch Series.

Kenny Wallace to help McMurray at Memphis
October 24

Kenny Wallace will practice and qualify for Jamie McMurray in the No. 26 Roush Fenway Racing Ford for NASCAR Busch Series Sam's Town 250 this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Wallace will practice the car Friday and qualify it Saturday morning. McMurray will fly from Atlanta Motor Speedway following Nextel Cup practice Saturday to compete in the Busch event that afternoon. The No. 26 team has not competed in all the races this year and must qualify on speed.

Roush Fenway Racing Teams Following World Series
October 24

The Roush Fenway Racing stable of drivers have kept a keen eye on the Major League Baseball playoffs – especially the stunning comeback the Boston Red Sox made to clinch a trip to their second World Series in four years.

Carl Edwards for one, has gotten some inspiration from the Red Sox beating-the-odds storyline. The Sox came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Cleveland Indians and move on to the Fall Classic, where they will take on the upstart Colorado Rockies. Now Edwards looks to close a 285-point deficit in the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup.

“I think it’s great the way the Red Sox came back to beat the Indians,” said Edwards. “I was watching Manny Ramirez’s interview after the game and he said ‘we worked hard and never gave up’ – that was great and really inspiring. With that attitude and drive I have no doubt that the Sox will win the World Series.”

Jamie McMurray plans to catch Game 1 at Fenway Park. “As part of Roush Fenway Racing, I’m not only excited for the whole Red Sox organization, but also for my friend Josh Beckett,” said McMurray. “Hopefully, I can make it up to Wednesday’s game and cheer them on.”

NASCAR fights Ky. Speedway trial
By Kevin Kelly, Cincinnati Enquirer,October 24

COVINGTON - The Kentucky Speedway’s antitrust lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in March, but lawyers representing NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. soon will try to convince a federal judge that a trial isn’t necessary.

U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman will hear arguments Nov. 19 in Covington on several motions filed in the case - including a sealed motion for summary judgment filed earlier this year by NASCAR and ISC.

The speedway filed suit in July 2005 alleging NASCAR and ISC violated antitrust laws by restricting which tracks host Nextel cup races and trying to “monopolize the market for hosting premium stock car racing events.”

In an amended complaint filed in April, the speedway said it wanted NASCAR to develop "objective factors" for the awarding of Nextel Cup races; for the France family to give up control of either ISC (a public company that operates tracks and whose majority of voting stock is owned by the Frances) or NASCAR (a private company owned by the Frances); for ISC to sell at least eight of the 12 tracks it owns that host Nextel Cup events; and more than $200 million in damages.
