Carl Edwards apologized Tuesday for a very public post race confrontation with teammate Matt Kenseth following last Sunday’s Nextel Cup event at Martinsville.
"I was definitely wrong for showing my anger and putting on an aggressive display towards Matt after the race," Edwards said. "I want to apologize to my fans and everyone -- That was definitely the wrong thing to do."
Edwards said that frustration from a long day might have helped trigger the incident. His No. 99 Ford suffered alternator failure around lap 185, forcing him to conserve battery voltage and turn off all fans, Edwards faced am uphill battle keeping the scorching rotors cool without the fans.
"I went down in the corner, and I had all my fans off," Edwards explained. "I couldn't get the car stopped like I planned [to]. I hit him in the door in turn 1. We went down in turn 3 and he pile-dived me so hard in the rear end that I barely saved it."
Edwards recovered and finished 11th place, keeping his fifth place position in the Chase for the Nextel Cup Standings. But as he exited the track, he ran into Kenseth.
"I was walking out [of the track] thinking about how frustrated I was," Edwards said. "I then look up and right there in front of me is Matt Kenseth standing there. I don't remember what he said or even if he looked at me wrong."
Edwards said that he had left a message for Kenseth on Monday, but it had not been returned by midday Tuesday, Edwards said. Kenseth, the 2003 series champion, refused to be interviewed about the incident, a team publicist said.
According to Edwards, his anger towards his teammate didn’t just stem from Sunday’s race but had been building over the last few months.
"What led up to the deal that happened after the race of me confronting Matt, it was not a one-day deal," Edwards said. "It wasn't just Sunday's on-track incident where I bumped into Matt and he bumped into me harder and I got madder all day."
The two also exchanged fenders during the Kansas Busch race several weeks ago. At the time Edwards blamed Kenseth for an accident that ended Edwards day.
Merchandise power Motorsports Authentics takes action to cut losses By Michael Smith,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, October 24
Merchandise power Motorsports Authentics, reeling from losses that could
reach $40 million to $50 million this year, is cutting costs and
desperately trying to figure out what happened to a market that was
delivering profits not so long ago.
In addition to the inventory losses, MA is on pace to record operating
losses of $20 million to $25 million this year, up from the $15 million
to $20 million estimated in July. The latest figures were revealed in a
third-quarter earnings report by International Speedway Corp., a 50-50
owner with Speedway Motorsports Inc.
“That’s how you go from a disappointing year to a disaster,” said Bob
Simonson, a financial analyst at William Blair & Co. who has covered
motorsports since 1999. “We’re seeing that this is a bigger task than we
thought” to turn the company around.
