Quote of the Day:

“I have to prove my worthiness, just like they do. In my opinion I am a championship driver, and just because I had some bad luck this year doesn't mean I should change the way I race guys that are going for the Cup. ”

REFUSE TO LOSE
Stewart May be Down but he isn't out
By By Greg Engle,Editor Cup Scene Daily October 26

Tony Stewart may be down, but he certainly isn’t out.

VIDEO: Jimmie Johnson discusses the key to winning at Atlanta Motor Speedway is figuring out a way to run close to the wall

More Videos

While most of the attention has been focused on the top three in points, Stewart has quietly been hanging on in fourth.

People have said stick a fork in those from fourth back, they’re done. According to many, the Chase will be decided between the Hendrick duo of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson over the course of the final four races. Clint Bowyer has a slim chance, but even he’s a long shot. For those behind the top three, well there’s always next year.

Whoever issued that forecast however forget to tell Smoke.

"Anything can happen to any of the teams," says Stewart. "At this point, who knows? Until somebody comes up and says ok, mathematically you are out of it, until then, we have got a shot. That is all I can say about it. That is all we know.”

Last year, Stewart scored more points than any other driver over the course of the last ten races, despite not being in the Chase. He also scored victories in two of the final four races, the first coming at Atlanta.

During the series last visit to Atlanta, in March, Stewart led 151 laps and finished second to Johnson. The result was his 11th top 10 finish in the last 12 races including his two wins at Atlanta. That’s the kind of success that should keep Stewart in the mix and makes him a threat for victory Sunday.

Edwards looks to clinch at Memphis
By Charles Krall,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 26

Carl Edwards has been in the center of the NASCAR news this week thanks to his much-publicized confrontation with Roush Fenway Racing teammate Matt Kenseth following the Nextel Cup Series race at Martinsville. He hopes to stay in the news this weekend by clinching the Busch Series title Saturday at Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, Tenn.

-->>The Edwards File

Edwards exerted his dominance in the first half of the Busch season, winning four times in the first 15 races and building a 662-point lead over Kevin Harvick in second. Since then, Edwards’ luck has turned.

In the 16 races since his fourth win of the season at Nashville in June, Edwards has finished 20th or worse eight times. In the past two races, he has finishes of 38th at Kansas and a 33rd at Lowe’s. After racking up 11 top five finishes in the first 15 races, Edwards has three since.

The point advantage over second remains formidable, but current series runner-up David Reutimann has closed from 811 points out of the lead after Nashville to 638.

“From the first half of the season to the second half, we haven’t really performed that much differently,” Edwards said. “We’ve had terrible results. I mean, starting at Kentucky (the week after Nashville), leading the race, dominating and being wrecked on a restart.

“Last week we had what I thought was the fastest car. And Jimmie Johnson, of all people, spun out at the speedway, and we ended up getting wrecked there. It was like the most crazy luck that I think has put us in this position.”

Edwards needs to lead by 585 points after Saturday’s race to clinch the title.

Gordon to give command
October 26

Jeff Gordon will have the unique opportunity to give the starting command for a race he will be competing in, when he says the famous "gentlemen, start your engines" line at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Gordon is marking the 15th anniversary of his Nextel Cup debut, which happened to be the only time he raced against seven-time champion Richard Petty, who was making his final career start in the same event.

"It's an honor to give the command to start engines prior to the race at a track where my Cup Series career began 15 years ago," said Gordon. "For the first time, the entire crowd may actually cheer for something I did.

"Or, then again, this may be the first time that the command is booed," he added.

The four-time Nextel Cup champion is intimately familiar with reactions from the anti-Gordon army, who usually boo him whenever he wins a race, or even worse, start throwing cans at his car as was the case this year at Talladega.

Petty will serve as Grand Marshall, waving the green flag for the 500-mile race.

Penalties dismissed against No. 90 Busch team
By Jim Utter,Charlotte Observer, October 26

National Stock Car Racing Commissioner Charles Strang, the final appellant authority in NASCAR, has thrown out penalties assessed to Robert Yates Racing's No. 90 Busch Series team dating back to the Aug. 4 race at Montreal.

In eliminating the 25 car owner and driver point penalties and the $5,000 fine to crew chief Charles Barraclough, Strang found "the results of the inspection process are not adequate to prove culpability on the part of the appellant or his associates."

Strang's decision was announced in a statement released Thursday.

The team had originally appealed to the National Stock Car Racing Commission and had the penalty reduced, but elected to make a final appeal to Strang, which was held on Wednesday.

NASCAR inspectors had originally determined that divider pistons in both front shock absorbers were not installed to specifications on driver Stephen Leicht's car during the Montreal race weekend.

NASCAR still FAN-tastic
By Mark DeCotis, Florida Today,October 26

It's no big deal.

That's Mike Joy's take on empty seats at Nextel Cup races and less-than-sparkling TV ratings.

The veteran race announcer, who is the main voice of Fox's NASCAR telecasts, sees various reasons for a decline in attendance and flat TV numbers, believing they do not reflect a decrease in interest.

One of the big issues affecting live attendance is the whole wallet issue.

Only Six Points Separate 34th and 35th Place In Owner Points
October 26

A mere six points separates the 34th and 35th place teams in this week’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series owner points. The No. 45 American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge owned and driven by Kyle Petty sits in the 34th position with 2,511 points. Right on his heels is the No. 22 Caterpillar Toyota, owned by Bill Davis and driven by Dave Blaney in the 35th spot.

The top 35 teams in the owner standings are guaranteed automatic starting spots each week. Other teams must earn their berths based on qualifying speeds.

The 36th position is held by the No. 21 Little Debbie Ford team, owned by Glen Wood and driven by former series champion Bill Elliott. That team is currently 142 points out of the top 35.

The No. 66 Best Buy Chevrolet team, owned by Joe Custer, made a driver change earlier this week. Jeremy Mayfield, who has been driving for Bill Davis Racing this year, signed a deal on Monday to drive the No. 66 in the four remaining NASCAR Nextel Cup races this season in addition to all of the 2008 season. Mayfield replaces Jeff Green.

The View From Fanville
This Full Moon May be Too Close for Comfort
By Amy Hair,Senior columnist,Cup Scene Daily,October 26

Thursday night there was a full moon…a big huge bright “Hunter’s Moon”. It’s traditionally called the Hunters Moon because way back when, the fields had been harvested by this time of the year and there was a much clearer view of the land. So when the moon would rise, the hunters would have a full view of the animals that normally would hide in the night shadows.

This particular full moon that we just had on Thursday morning around 4:30 am, also happens to be the closest and therefore biggest full moon of 2007. It was about 50,000 kilometers – or 30,000 miles – closer to the Earth than 2007’s most distant and smallest full moon, last April.

This Day in NASCAR History
By Bill Marx, The Sporting News,October 26

2002: Jamie McMurray becomes the 100th driver to win a Busch Series race when he takes the checkers in the Aaron’s 312 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. McMurray leads only the last lap. Finishing second is Mr. Aaron’s himself, Michael Waltrip, who leads a race-high 114 of 203 laps.
