Quote of the Day:

“I have to prove my worthiness, just like they do. In my opinion I am a championship driver, and just because I had some bad luck this year doesn't mean I should change the way I race guys that are going for the Cup. ”

KEEPING IT REAL
Will the real Carl Edwards please stand up?
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, October 27

HAMPTON, Ga. -- These aren't the Roushkateers anymore.

Roush Fenway Racing is a world away from Disneyland. Pollyanna has left the building. And Carl Edwards' teammates aren't telling him, "Why? Because we like you."

Edwards and 2003 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Matt Kenseth don't pretend to be friends, but Edwards made the mistake last Sunday of letting the world see an explosion of the festering animosity between the two teammates.

In fairness, the eruption was all Edwards, who interrupted Kenseth during a television interview with SPEED Channel's Bob Dillner after the Subway 500 at Martinsville. The camera rolled as Edwards pushed Kenseth, expressed his displeasure up-close-and-personal and left the scene after a throwing a mock punch in Kenseth's direction.

Edwards' anger came to a head a few hours after he and Kenseth had traded shots on the racetrack. Given the vehemence of the reaction of Kenseth and his peers in the days that followed, it's apparent that Edwards began ruffling the feathers of his fellow drivers long before the incident at Martinsville.

"I was not going to punch Matt," Edwards said Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. "I was just real angry, and I wanted get a rise out of him."

Biffle beats Busch for Atlanta pole
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 27

HAMPTON, Ga. -- The family feud in the Roush Fenway Racing camp didn't faze Greg Biffle, who toured 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway in 28.807 seconds (192.453 mph) to win the pole for Sunday's Pep Boys Auto 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup race.

By a margin of .004 seconds, Biffle dislodged Kurt Busch (192.426 mph) from the top spot for the seventh race in the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup. Dale Jarrett (191.655 mph) qualified third, followed by Kasey Kahne (191.595 mph) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (191.489 mph).

Chase drivers Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth, the Roush Fenway teammates whose post-race altercation at Martinsville drew the lion's share of media attention during the week, will start 16th and 17th, respectively, having posted the exact same speed in qualifying (189.818 mph).

In addition to Busch, Edwards and Kenseth, the other nine drivers in the Chase will start from the following positions: Jimmie Johnson, sixth; points leader Jeff Gordon, eighth; Denny Hamlin, 18th; Kyle Busch, 19th; Martin Truex Jr., 20th; Clint Bowyer, 26th; Jeff Burton, 28th, Tony Stewart, 30th; and Kevin Harvick, 34th.

Riggs gets an Early Out: Carpentier to join Cup Starting at Phoenix
October 27

Patrick Carpentier will take over Scott Riggs' seat in the No. 10 Gillett Evernham Dodge in the final two races of the Nextel Cup season at Phoenix and Homestead.

Earlier this month Carpentier was announced as Riggs' replacement for the 2008 season, after surprising many in his Busch Series debut at Montreal, where he finished second, and then leading some laps in his Nextel Cup debut at Watkins Glen a week later, his first outing for his current team.

Carpentier will now have the chance to get some valuable running before next year's Daytona 500, although he will still have to go through the challenge of qualifying his car on time at both Phoenix and Homestead. The No. 10 is currently outside the top 35 in the owner standings.

"We're looking forward to the 2008 season and in preparation for that we want to give the No. 10 team the opportunity to work with Patrick as much as possible," said Ray Evernham, CEO of Gillett Evernham Motorsports.

"Putting Patrick in the car before the end of this season will offer him valuable seat time as well as the added opportunity to work with Kasey [Kahne] and Elliott [Sadler]."

The former Champ Car and IRL IndyCar Series driver will also compete in the Busch Series race at the season finale at Homestead for Gillett Evernham.

Smith looking at Bristol-like N.C. track
By Lee Spencer,FOXSports.com, October 27

HAMPTON, Ga. - Anyone who thought Lowe's Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith was bluffing when he threatened to move his track away from Concord, N.C., better think again.

Although the Concord City Council overturned its original decision to allow Speedway Motorsports Inc. to build a drag strip on the Lowe's Motor Speedway property, Smith, 80, said on Friday that he was "90 percent" certain that he would be moving the speedway regardless of further resolutions Friday.

"Maybe we've worn out our welcome," Smith said.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the new facility would be a high-banked .75-mile track or smaller with stadium seating similar to Bristol. The speedway would not just be a generic racetrack, it would be an attraction.

Stremme Teaming With Wallace
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 27

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Rusty Wallace confirmed Thursday that David Stremme will compete in 20 Nationwide Series races next year in a car fielded by Rusty Wallace Inc. The entry will be a second car for Wallace, who owns the No. 66 Dodge driven by his son, Steve Wallace.

Stremme is expected to compete in Nationwide Series events that are companions to Sprint Cup races next year. Chase Austin reportedly will share the ride with Stremme and will race in the stand-alone Nationwide Series events.

Stremme will leave Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of the year and is still attempting to land a full-time Sprint Cup ride for 2008.

Hmiel Takes Job With Ganassi
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 27

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Steve Hmiel parted ways with Dale Earnhardt Inc. last week, but the veteran director of competition wasn't out of work for long.

Chip Ganassi Racing announced Friday that Hmiel has joined the organization as manager of competition.

"I really couldn't be happier about this move," Hmiel said. "I knew that the next role that I would accept would have to be in the perfect situation, and this one is. Chip and (co-owner) Felix (Sabates) have an organization that is on the verge of great things, and I really look forward to helping take them to the next level."

Ganassi fields cars for Juan Pablo Montoya, Reed Sorenson and David Stremme, whom IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti will replace on the Ganassi roster next season.

The View From Fanville
Losing it? Nah…Just Wondering About Something
By Amy Hair,Senior columnist,Cup Scene Daily,October 27

I’ve decided there’s a job in the world of NASCAR that has my name on it. It’s specific, it’s needed very badly, and for some reason it’s not one that the world of the media would like to see created. I’ll tell you in a few minutes what I think it is…but first…

I’ve watched all week as the media, most of them, not all, have pretty much taken the incident between Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards and turned it into a story of vengeance, anger management, dysfunctional teams and race car drivers that have now labeled as “bullies”.

This Day in NASCAR History
By Bill Marx, The Sporting News,October 27

1963: Joe Weatherly wins the last of his 25 Grand National races, taking the checkered flag in a 150-mile race at Orange Speedway’s nine-tenths of a mile dirt track in Hillsboro, N.C. Weatherly starts from the pole and leads all but 40 of the 167 laps. Only nine of the 24 cars that start the race are running at the finish. Bob Welborn in a Petty Enterprises Plymouth finishes second more than a lap back.
