Roush Fenway Racing is a world away from Disneyland. Pollyanna has left
the building. And Carl Edwards' teammates aren't telling him, "Why?
Because we like you."
Edwards and 2003 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Matt Kenseth don't pretend
to be friends, but Edwards made the mistake last Sunday of letting the
world see an explosion of the festering animosity between the two
teammates.
In fairness, the eruption was all Edwards, who interrupted Kenseth
during a television interview with SPEED Channel's Bob Dillner after the
Subway 500 at Martinsville. The camera rolled as Edwards pushed Kenseth,
expressed his displeasure up-close-and-personal and left the scene after
a throwing a mock punch in Kenseth's direction.
Edwards' anger came to a head a few hours after he and Kenseth had
traded shots on the racetrack. Given the vehemence of the reaction of
Kenseth and his peers in the days that followed, it's apparent that
Edwards began ruffling the feathers of his fellow drivers long before
the incident at Martinsville.
"I was not going to punch Matt," Edwards said Friday at Atlanta Motor
Speedway. "I was just real angry, and I wanted get a rise out of him."
Biffle beats Busch for Atlanta pole
By Reid Spencer,Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service,October 27
HAMPTON, Ga. -- The family feud in the Roush Fenway
Racing camp didn't faze Greg Biffle, who toured 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor
Speedway in 28.807 seconds (192.453 mph) to win the pole for Sunday's
Pep Boys Auto 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup race.
By a margin of .004 seconds, Biffle dislodged Kurt Busch (192.426 mph)
from the top spot for the seventh race in the Chase for the NASCAR
Nextel Cup. Dale Jarrett (191.655 mph) qualified third, followed by
Kasey Kahne (191.595 mph) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (191.489 mph).
Chase drivers Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth, the Roush Fenway teammates
whose post-race altercation at Martinsville drew the lion's share of
media attention during the week, will start 16th and 17th, respectively,
having posted the exact same speed in qualifying (189.818 mph).
In addition to Busch, Edwards and Kenseth, the other nine drivers in the
Chase will start from the following positions: Jimmie Johnson, sixth;
points leader Jeff Gordon, eighth; Denny Hamlin, 18th; Kyle Busch, 19th;
Martin Truex Jr., 20th; Clint Bowyer, 26th; Jeff Burton, 28th, Tony
Stewart, 30th; and Kevin Harvick, 34th.
