DEI, Ganassi merge

Chip Ganassi Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. will merge operations beginning with the 2009 Sprint Cup season, the teams announced in a news release Wednesday. Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates will field the NASCAR-maximum four Sprint Cup cars in 2009, thus cutting out two full-time cars that DEI operated in 2008.
The Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing driver lineup will be Martin Truex Jr. in the No. 1 and Aric Almirola in the No. 8 from DEI, Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 42 from Ganassi and a driver still to be determined for the No. 41....

Jimmie Johnson’s third consecutive championship is well within reach, needing to finish 36th or better in this Sunday’s season finale Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to clinch.

3: Laps led by David Gilliland, the fewest among the 29 Sprint Cup drivers who have started all 35 races this season. Two drivers in that group have led four laps -- Bobby Labonte and Robby Gordon. The final race of 2008 is Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
