Denny Hamlin was ushered in as the 2006 Raybestos Rookie of the Year by being presented with a portrait and a check for $50,000, "There have been so many great drivers who have won this award.I feel like I am in great company."
Chevrolet was presented for the 30th time the manufacturer's title. In a display of pure class and graciousness they presented Jimmie Johnson's wife, Chandra, with a 2007 Corvette Convertible.
The Marketing Achievement Award went to Allstate Insurance for their innovative commercials with driver Kasey Kahne.
The Buddy Shuman Award was given to NASCAR's Jim Hunter, "I love this sport, I love NASCAR, I love the people in this sport and I thank you for this honor." It was truly a surprise to Hunter who sits on the committee for this award and thought it was being given to Barney Hall, until his name was called.
Bank of America's Mid-Race Leader Award, the USG Improving the Finish Award and the Wix Lap Leader Award were all presented to Tony Stewart.
"When you don't make the Chase, you have to find ways to supplement your income," joked Stewart.
The Budweiser Pole Award for the most top starting spots of the season went to six time pole sitter Kasey Kahne. He also received the Commit Lozenges: Commit to Win Award.
DirectTV's Crew Chief of the Year trophy went to Denny Hamlin's crew chief, Mike Ford.
The Goodyear Fastest Lap Award was presented to Matt Kenseth.
Richard Childress Racing's No. 31 pit crew were awarded the Mechanix Wear Most Valuable pit crew award, while Jimmie Johnson's team won the Checkers/Rally's Championship Pit Crew Award.
Championship awards were also given to Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse Stores for being the championship driver, crew chief and sponsor.
For the fourth consecutive year, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was given the Chex Most Popular Driver honors. The award is voted on solely by race fans.
The Myers Brothers Award was given to 1973 Cup series champion Benny Parsons. Parsons could not be present in New York this week he is recovering from lung cancer but sent a video thanking everyone and promising his return in 2007.
The award sponsored by the National Motorsports Press Association has been a Friday morning 8am breakfast every year, but was moved to a Thursday lunch this year. NMPA President Kenny Bruce heartily thanked Earnhardt at the events close for his tireless effort over the last several years to get the awards moved from a breakfast to a lunch for all the "nightowls" out there.
Edwards takes new profession for a spin
It took years of hard work for Carl Edwards to realize his dream of racing in NASCAR. Now the driver of the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford wants to use that success to help others realize their dreams
"We were sitting around one night in my house in Columbia, and I was listening to one of the artists telling me how tough it was to get somebody to produce their music," Edwards said. "I just decided, 'Well, we'll just buy the recording equipment and make our own record and do it that way.' "
Together with high school friend Aaron Hayes, Edwards built a professional recording studio they named Lab99, playing off the number on Edwards' Nextel Cup car. Then the pair began work on the first project.
"This is one of those things that seems like it would be a challenge and something that will help the artists that we have so far," Edwards said. "It's something that will help get them out there and help them with their careers."
The next step was to choose the artists that would be on the first CD, appropriately named "That One CD," a mix of rap, hip-hop, rock and R&B.
"Columbia is a small enough town that everyone knows everyone," Edwards said. "Essentially we opened it up and said that anyone who wants to get on board we'd be willing to talk to them."
Seven artists were chosen for the project, but Edwards stressed this isn't a project that relied only on his circle of close friends.
"I already knew half of them, but the rest I heard of through a friend of a friend, even through my little brother," Edwards said. "(But) there wasn't really an approval process because I feel that if someone is passionate about their music, that's all that really matters."
5 questions with … Carl Edwards
In 2005 Carl Edwards won four races, made the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup and tied for second in the final series standings. In 2006, Edwards endured a season with no wins and finished 12th in the standings.
Q: You're a former schoolteacher. How would you grade your season overall?
A: I'd give us about a "B" for the season. It's a performance-based grade for me, not results. Our performance was there. It's just that the results weren't
Rivers revved up to work 'Yellow Carpet'
NEW YORK -- When Melissa Rivers works the "Yellow Carpet" at the NASCAR Awards Banquet for the Speed Channel, anything might happen -- and probably will.
A self-proclaimed sports nut, Rivers is probably best known for the accurate and often acerbic commentary she shares with her mother, Joan, on Hollywood's red carpets.
Sporting News' Lee Spencer spoke with Rivers as she prepared to make her NASCAR Nation debut from the Waldorf-Astoria on Friday.
Jacques Villeneuve heading to Craftsman Truck Series in 2007
Former Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve has reached an agreement with Roush Racing that will have him racing in NASCAR in 2007.
Team president Geoff Smith confirmed this week that Villeneuve would begin his career in the Craftsman Truck Series before moving to the Busch Grand National Series.
Smith adds that there's a 50-percent chance Villeneuve could be in Montreal next August for the inaugural Busch Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The View From Fanville
While the fellows are finishing up their hoorah week in New York, I’ve been wandering around the internet and found little tidbits of information to fill my brain in between awards and banquet airings on TV.
Did you know that the inaugural stock car race in Daytona Beach took place on March 8, 1936? And all kinds of cars were eligible, including coupes, hardtops and sports cars. As the race began, the heavier cars were soon bogged down in the sand…but guess what kind of cars flew right over the sand and took the first top six finishing positions? It was those old reliable and apparently lighter weight Fords. And who was driving one of those Fords in fifth place? None other than a young Bill France.
