NO BULL
Richert to serve as Vickers' crew chief
December 7

Team Red Bull on Wednesday named Doug Richert as the crew chief for Brian Vickers' No. 83 Toyota Camry in the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

Richert, 46, was most recently the crew chief for the Roush Racing No. 16 Ford Fusion driven by Greg Biffle, the 2005 Nextel runner-up. Richert has worked with a number of NASCAR stars, including the late Dale Earnhardt.

Team owner Jack Roush had swapped crew chiefs round during the 2006 season and Richert had been relieved of his duties with Biffle prior to the last race of the season. The speculation was that he would be sent to driver Jamie McMurray’s struggling team at Roush. But Richert felt that the move was less to help McMurray and more about the performance of Biffle.

“Not taking anything away from Jamie or anyone on that team – because we all had equal stuff – but it was probably more of a mental thing for me,” Richert said on MRN’s Garage Pass show Wednesday. “I thought we had one of the best deals going, and to have it taken away because we only won two races and were 13th points, that hurt.”

Richert says he felt that as a direct result of Biffle’s less than stellar year, perhaps he was being set up as the fall guy

“Well, if you were going to look at it from the outside, I guess you could say I was the guy that took the heat for not being in the Top-10,” Richert said “But this stuff doesn’t get handed to you on a silver platter. You have to go out and work for it. If there were problems with communication, a situation between myself and Greg, or something that Greg wasn’t liking, it needed to be worked on. It’s not going to fix itself, and I don’t feel like we had the opportunity to fix it and make it better. That was frustrating.”

Although he was offered another role at Roush, Richert said he wanted to remain on Nextel Cup.

“I still had a position with Roush Racing, but it was leaning toward the kind of role that Jimmy Fennig played over in the Busch and Truck shops this year,” Richert said. “I really wanted to stay in the Nextel Cup Series if at all possible, and that’s the thought process that led me to where I am now.”

After letting it be known in the garage area that he was looking for opportunities outside Roush, Richert settled on Red Bull and joins an entirely new team that will participate in the series' inaugural Toyota program in 2007.

“Getting in on the ground floor of something like this excites me,” Richert said. “I’ve been (involved) in a lot of start-up teams, and this opportunity kind of rose to the top. When it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be, and this is what came out in the end.”

Big challenges ahead

As NASCAR closes the book on the 2006 season and turns its full attention to 2007 and beyond, a gaze into our crystal ball shows a less-than-clear future.

In this photo submitted by Grand American Road Racing, newly crowned NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, left, talks with Grand-Am driver Scott Pruett, right, in the pit area during a test session for the Grand American Rolex Series in Homestead, Fla., on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006. America's biggest and most popular motor sport faces several important challenges – including what some perceive are two of the most critical in its history.

THE BIG TWO

Car of Tomorrow

After years of development, NASCAR's all-new and designed-to-be-safer stock car has finally been deemed ready for prime time. Thousands of developmental hours, critical input from teams and several hundred laps have gone into producing the next generation of stock cars.

Nextel Cup teams have already spent millions to build an infrastructure to assemble the new car, although it still faces strong criticism from within the Cup garage.

NASCAR officials stand by the new car and say that there is no turning back. However, the proof will be in its on-track performance.

The new car makes its debut on March 25, 2007, at Bristol Motor Speedway. Circle that date as the start of a new era in NASCAR.

Dennis Setzer Signs With Spears Motorsports
December 7

AGUA DULCE, Calif. - Veteran NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Dennis Setzer will drive for one of the tour’s pioneer teams in 2007. Setzer has joined the California-owned team of Wayne and Connie Spears in pursuit of their first series championship.

Setzer, a 16-time winner and No. 2 in all-time winnings with $4,658,514, has driven for Morgan-Dollar Motorsports since 2001 and twice has finished runnerup for the series championship. He fell to 13th this season – his first finish outside the top 10 since competing fulltime in 1999.

The 46-year-old Newton, N.C. native has committed to Spears Motorsports for 2007-08.

Spears Motorsports has competed in all but two of the series’ 292 races and was part of the inaugural field at Phoenix International Raceway on Feb. 5, 1995.

The team, whose driver in 2006 was Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate Aric Almirola, counts three victories – all with David Starr. Starr posted championship finishes of fifth, fifth and seventh before leaving the team after the 2005 season.

Stewart joins 'the dark side,' gets radio show rolling
By David Newton
ESPN.com,December 7

NEW YORK -- Tony Stewart leaned into the microphone in the fishbowl-like room on the 36th floor of the building that houses the Sirius Satellite Radio studios and smiled.

"Getting my first media credential almost made me want to throw up because I'm officially a member now," the 2002 and 2005 Nextel Cup champion told his live radio audience.

Matt Yocum, the co-host of Stewart's new show, laughed and said, "Yes, you are a member of the dark side now."

After upside-down '06, expect more of same next season

NASCAR honored its top 10 drivers during an elaborate postseason banquet at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City last week.

After winning the year's final race, look for Greg Biffle to be a contender in 2007. (Getty Images) The Nextel Cup champion, Jimmie Johnson, was of course the star of the show. He was joined by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth and a host of others.

But the bigger story might have been who wasn't there when the top 10 were honored. In fact, one of the biggest stories of 2006 was not who made the Chase for the Nextel Cup, but who didn't.

Isn't Life Strange?

Jimmie Johnson and the only primary sponsor he's ever had on the side of his NSCAR Nextel Cup car, Lowe's Home Improvement, is joining the (Bill) Riley - (Jim) Matthews Motorsports team for at least the 2007 (45th!) Rolex 24 At Daytona and the July 5 Brumos 250, also at Daytona International Speedway.

Now that's pretty wild.

Why?

Well, we'll have to undertake about a year's journey down memory lane when Riley Technologies Vice President and General Manager Ron McMahon one day was talking to John Bickford, suggesting that the latter's stepson - some guy by the name of Jeff Gordon - might want to hookup with the SunTrust team for a Rolex 24 Daytona Prototype run.
