KING OF THE WORLD
Harvicks bask in Orlando for Champion's Week
December 8

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Busch Series Champion's Week opened at Disney's BoardWalk in Orlando on Thursday with a celebration of the series' 25th anniversary and a look forward to 2007

The spotlight shown on DeLana Harvick, whose KHI team has won the past two Daytona openers.
2006 Busch champion Kevin Harvick was joined by six other members of the top 10 for a media luncheon at ESPN Club before heading to Walt Disney World Speedway for "hot laps" with the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

It's a lot of fun here," Harvick said. "I'm looking forward to all of the guys coming down and being able to celebrate everything that we did this year. I'm excited to go ride all of the rides and hang out."

The luncheon kicked off a two-day blitz of events leading up to the Series Awards Banquet on Friday night at Disney's Grand Floridian Hotel. Harvick will be crowned Busch Series champion for the second time in his career after putting together one of the top seasons in series history. Team owner Richard Childress will be celebrating his third Busch Series championship.

"The Busch Series has been really important to me because that's where I learned how to race and how to be acceptable in the garage," Harvick said. "The series teaches you the basic ropes of NASCAR Nextel Cup racing, and you still get to be on the track getting more experience."

Although Harvick is the guest of honor for the week's events, it was his wife, DeLana, who accepted the first accolades of the day. Daytona International Speedway president Robin Braig made a special presentation renaming the historic track "DeLana International Speedway" for the day. DeLana is the owner of Kevin Harvick Inc., which fields the No. 33 Chevrolet that Tony Stewart has driven to victory in the past two season-opening Busch Series events at Daytona.

"To be able to come back [to Daytona] and to have won the Busch race two years in a row, taking a look back to where I came from, I'm pretty proud of that," DeLana Harvick said. "It means a lot to me. I'm really honored. How many people get to have their name on Daytona's walls?"

The presentation was fitting, as Daytona International Speedway will be the site of the first Busch Series race with new TV partner ABC/ESPN. The Daytona 300, along with the entire 2007 Busch Series season, will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

In addition to Harvick, second-place Carl Edwards, third-place Clint Bowyer, fourth-place Denny Hamlin, fifth-place J.J. Yeley, sixth-place Paul Menard, eighth-place Johnny Sauter, Raybestos Rookie of the Year Danny O'Quinn Jr. and Busch Series director Joe Balash were present for the day's activities.

Seventh-place Kyle Busch and ninth-place Greg Biffle spent Thursday at a Goodyear tire test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and will participate in Friday's activities. Tenth-place Reed Sorenson was unavailable due to personal reasons, but participated in telephone interviews.

O'Quinn especially marveled at being among such a distinguished group of drivers.

"Racing with these guys teaches you discipline on when you need to go hard and how to race somebody," O'Quinn said. "There is a lot you can pick up by watching these guys drive and being out there on track with them."

Riding shotgun with a rising star

The Sporting News, December 8

There never will be another Dale Earnhardt, but Denny Hamlin has the ability to pull off the Intimidator's never-duplicated feat of following his rookie of the year award with a NASCAR championship.

Hamlin's car control is nothing short of amazing. It's hard to believe that two years ago he was running late models at Southside Speedway near Richmond, Va. Last week he was in New York accepting the award as the sport's top rookie, no small feat considering this season's rookies had the credentials to make this the most competitive class since 2002, the year Ryan Newman nudged Jimmie Johnson for the award.

Instead, Hamlin blew 'em away. He swept the Pocono races, won three poles and finished 20 times in the top 10, including eight top fives. Then he won a bet with his teammate -- and two-time Nextel Cup champion -- Tony Stewart that he would top the fourth-place finish Stewart had during his rookie of the year season in 2000. Hamlin locked down third place, 12 points behind Matt Kenseth and 68 behind Johnson.

Biffle Makes Hard Impact in Fiery Crash at LVMS During NASCAR Testing
December 8

Testing tires is pretty boring stuff for most drivers, but this week’s two-day Goodyear test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway left Kyle Busch excited and Greg Biffle with a headache.

The two drivers spent Wednesday and Thursday testing tires to help the tire manufacturer find the proper tire combination for the new 20-degree banking at LVMS. It will determine which tires Goodyear brings back for the NASCAR-sanctioned test Jan. 29-30 as well as for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 NASCAR Nextel Cup event on March 11.

“There are a lot of neat characteristics to the track,” said Busch, a Las Vegas native. “It’s still pretty wide and a great racing surface. It’s wide enough that we’ll be able to run two and three wide. The transitions from the corner to the straightaways and then the straightaways to the corners are awesome. It’s a great layout.”

Biffle said Wednesday that he is looking forward to racing on the new layout. But his test ended early on Thursday when he made hard contact with the wall between turns one and two. The impact knocked the fuel pump off the car and made for a fiery scene. Busch, who was closely following Biffle, helped the veteran driver from his car. Biffle wasn’t injured, but decided to discontinue testing for the day.

“That was a really hard hit and we lost a good car,” Biffle said. “But I’m O.K.”

Unofficially, the drivers were clocked at speeds near 187 miles per hour, but Biffle said that may pick up to closer to 190 once the Nextel Cup teams start qualifying in March. Kasey Kahne holds the track qualifying record of 174.904 mph set in 2004.

Schrader to drive 18 for Bobby Hamilton Racing
December 8

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Ken Schrader has been tabbed to drive the No. 18 Fastenal Dodge for Bobby Hamilton Racing during the 2007 Craftsman Truck Series season.

Schrader will drive the BHR entry in the majority of NCTS events with a to-be-determined driver filling in when Schrader has Nextel Cup responsibilities that prevent him from competing in NCTS races.

Schrader and 2004 Craftsman Truck Series champion Bobby Hamilton have been both friends and competitors throughout their NASCAR careers and now they have joined forces to help re-establish BHR as a championship caliber NCTS team.

Boys just wanna have fun, too

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Some feel that NASCAR may have found the perfect place to hold its Busch Series banquet – Walt Disney World.

The vacation resort in the center of Florida is thought of as a great place to hang out and have fun with your friends.

The Nextel Cup drivers who make up eight of the top 10 spots in the final 2006 point standings tend to look at the Busch Series races they compete in on Saturday in pretty much the same fashion.

The View From Fanville
Remember Curtis Turner? A Little More Trivia
By Amy Hair
Cup Scene Daily,December 8

Yes, he’s the same man that was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame this year. But as a fan out here in Fanville, I found I didn’t know much about why he received such an honor…so I did a little research.

On Labor Day, September 4, 1950, the very first Southern Five Hundred at Harold Brasington’s brand new Darlington Raceway was about to begin. A young man by the name of Curtis Turner took the pole, and was accompanied on the three wide front row by Jimmy Thompson and Gober Sosebee.
