CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT
ORLANDO, Fla. – Friday began with fun and games but eventually turned to pomp and circumstance as Kevin Harvick was officially crowned champion of the NASCAR Busch Series Friday night.

Harvick put together one of the top seasons in series history. He finished the year with nine wins, 23 top fives and 32 top 10s. His 824-point final margin over second-place Carl Edwards was the largest in series history.
“This has just been an unbelievable season,” Harvick said. “Everybody has done an outstanding job all year. Getting to celebrate with my team tonight is something I’m looking forward to.”
Harvick and the other NASCAR Busch Series top-10 drivers arrived in Orlando on Wednesday night in advance of two days of media opportunities and other activities. NASCAR Busch Series Champion’s Week kicked off Thursday with Media Day at ESPN Club at Disney’s BoardWalk. The drivers then took turns spinning “hot laps” for the media with the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Walt Disney World Speedway.
The fun continued Friday morning as the group split time between three activities at Disney properties – batting practice, a fishing trip and a golf scramble.
Johnny Sauter and championship crew chief Shane Wilson led a group for a few rounds of batting practice at The Ballpark at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, home of the Atlanta Braves spring training camp. The group was met by Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett, an avid NASCAR fan who took batting practice with the drivers and offered pointers.
After several at-bats, Wilson, who played baseball in high school and had a brief college stint, was content with his performance.
“I made some contact,” Wilson said. “It’s been 16 years since I've picked up a bat ... and it felt like it.”
Apart from Barrett, the top slugger of the day was Sauter.
“I had a great time, and now have a blister to prove it,” Sauter said. “It was fun to spend the time with Michael (Barrett) and hopefully we can get him to a race sometime soon since he's such a big NASCAR fan.”
In the other activities, champion team owner Richard Childress joined a group that included B.A.S.S. pros for a morning fishing excursion. It came as no surprise when Childress, a noted outdoorsman, was among the first to land a fish. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates J.J. Yeley and Denny Hamlin participated in a nine-hole golf scramble at Osprey Ridge Golf Course, one of five championship courses on the Disney properties.
Waltrip hires Borland to head Jarrett's team
Michael Waltrip Racing announced Friday that Matt Borland, Larry Carter and David Hyder have been named crew chiefs of the organization for the 2007 Nextel Cup Series season.
"We are pleased to announce our crew chiefs today," Waltrip said. "We concentrated on pairing personalities to find the perfect qualified individuals for each position. Matt is a proven winner and we're proud to have him steering the No. 44 UPS Toyota team.
"I've known David for a while and look forward to him leading the NAPA team. I love his enthusiasm and the way he thinks. Obviously, Larry was vitally important in building our teams and I know he will be instrumental in building David Reutimann's future while driving his Toyota co-sponsored by Burger King and Domino's Pizza. We are fortunate to have all three of them under one roof."
Borland led Ryan Newman to 12 wins, 37 poles, 54 top-fives, 83 top-10s in 186 Nextel Cup Series starts. The 35-year-old joined Penske Racing South in November 1999 originally as an engineer. In 2001, Borland was then instrumental in his driver's success as he participated in a combination schedule in the ARCA, Busch Series and Nextel Cup Series.
Borland looked on as Newman amassed eight poles, two wins, five top-fives and 11 top-10 finishes.
In Borland's first full-time season in the Nextel Cup Series as a crew chief, he claimed one win, six pole awards, 14 top-five and 22 top-10s. Borland, also received trophies from winning The Winston and his driver clinched the Raybestos Rookie of the Year title and finished sixth in the championship standings.
Biffle dislocates shoulder in crash
Greg Biffle dislocated his right shoulder in a fiery accident at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and was unable to attend the Busch Series banquet Friday night.
Biffle was injured Thursday during a tire test for Goodyear in Las Vegas. He blew a tire, causing him to hit the wall between the first and second turns. The accident broke the fuel pump and caused his Ford to burst into flames.
Kyle Busch, the other driver at the test, was trailing Biffle at the time of the accident and helped Biffle escape from his burning car.
Biffle flew home to North Carolina after the accident and was examined Friday by Dr. Jerry Petty, who discovered the injury and advised Biffle not to travel to Walt Disney World for the Busch banquet. Biffle finished ninth in the series standings after running in 30 of the 35 events.
Biffle apologized for missing the banquet.
``It was a privilege and a great pleasure for me to continue to be a competitor ... in NASCAR's Busch Series this season,'' he said in a statement. ``I love racing in the Busch Series and I plan to continue to do so for many years.''
Goodyear tested tires Wednesday and Thursday at Las Vegas, which added 20 degrees of banking this year. The tire company must find the correct compound to bring to a NASCAR-sanctioned test at the track in late January, and the Nextel Cup event there in March.
Stu Grant, Goodyear's director of worldwide racing, said Biffle's failed tire was being sent back to the Akron, Ohio, plant for analysis. Grant said the right front tire failed without warning on the 36th of a 40-lap run.
Busch Rookie of the Year, O'Quinn Jr., still looking for a ride
It was mere coincidence that Danny O'Quinn Jr. was more or less on the periphery of Thursday's NASCAR Busch Series Championships' Week media day event at Disney. But in reality, that's where he finds himself.
Bereft of sponsorship for his Roush Racing Ford -- despite the fact that he is the 2006 Busch rookie of the year -- the strapping, 6-foot-5, 240-pound, 21-year-old son of Coeburn, Va., doesn't know what 2007 holds. But don't hang any black crepe or hum any funeral dirges for O'Quinn because he's been in this position before.
New York Mayor would have backed NASCAR, but saw no support
(New York) Mayor Michael Bloomberg would have liked a NASCAR track on Staten Island but decided the cause was not worth championing in the face of intense local opposition and legitimate traffic fears, he said yesterday.

The View From Fanville
Yes, he’s the same man that was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame this year. But as a fan out here in Fanville, I found I didn’t know much about why he received such an honor…so I did a little research.
