(Daytona Beach Fla.)-A lot of focus on Monday at Daytona International Speedway was on the former Bud man, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. But out on the track as well we saw last year’s Daytona 500 winner trying to get a feel for the track and it’s handling while in the new, more safety oriented car that has become mandatory for this year’s racing season. Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Chevrolet, posted a top speed of 180.545, right in the middle of a pack of Chevy speeds from the morning session. That speed wasn’t close to being up top, but Kevin was quick to tell us:

“We kind of came down here with a different plan than normal…engine wise, with components that they (teammates) ran, that they started with last week just to kind of get a handle…grasp of what car is the fastest and what car is not.”

--(Cont'd From Front Page)-- Harvick is glad NASCAR has made the full switch over to the new car:

“I think the biggest thing I’m looking forward to this year is racing the same car week in and week out. It’s just hard on the race teams to run two completely different full time race teams.”

Speaking of teams, Harvick is a team owner as well as a driver. Kevin Harvick, Inc. owns the No. 33 Chevy truck and with Ron Hornaday, Jr. behind the wheel, the team took the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship this past season.

Being a team owner is kind of like becoming a parent. You discover very quickly that the patience you never thought you had have to be found…and used:

“Well, the biggest thing I’ve learned is just that you can’t jump to conclusions right off the bat. You have to take a lot of information from a lot of different people, from a lot of different parts, pieces. In the beginning of owning the race team I would just jump to conclusions, and whether it was changing this person, changing that person, change is good, but it has to be at the right time.”

And finally, simply because everyone wants to know…what does Harvick think about Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and the No. 88?

“Well, for him personally I hope he does well. I think everybody in the garage is kind of rooting that direction. I don’t think anybody wants to see him not do well. He’s got a great organization around him, he’s got good people, he’s got everything that he needs…the chemistry part is the hardest thing… I think I’m just happy he’s happy.”
