Stealin’s Stealin’ and That’s a Fact Posted:0535hrs
By Amy Hair,Senior Columnist,Cup Scene Daily NASCAR’s soap opera continues on…and this time it involves theft, or at least an accusation of such. Roush Fenway Racing had a sway bar taken by a Toyota team back in January, or so it appears. And Mr. Roush is now voicing his opinion of the culprits and talking about legal action. What’s going to happen? Who knows? It could turn into a nasty, drawn out affair…or it could fade onto the back page of the sports section by next week, it will totally depend on what the actual, provable facts are.
Yeah, we know the guys push the rules to the limit, stretch the acceptable boundaries to the breaking point, and yes, just plain cheat on occasion. And we know that a lot of them get away with it…but…when they get caught they get whacked right? Penalties are doled out, probation rears its ugly head and humiliation is felt by the offending team even if only for a very short time. So why is NASCAR saying they are just going to stay out of this one? Hmmm… I’m thinking it could be because they know it happens more than we think it does, and just because it’s been brought to the public eye this time doesn’t mean they’ll treat it any different than any other time they’ve become aware of it. In other words…they’ll punish the cheaters and not the stealers. Or, it could be that history has told them that these type of incidents usually clean up with the dirty laundry in the wash and fade away with the stains…so they’ll just sit back and watch for awhile, probably a very good call actually. Of course, most of what we are hearing so far has been not much more than hearsay. Roush says he was robbed and he’s ticked. Okay…we got that part, so what else have we got? He says, they say, I say, you say…that’s about all we’ve got. On the other side of the opinion market we did get to hear Dale Earnhardt, Jr. comment on how he pretty much thinks the fellows around the garages have good heads on their shoulders and respect each other. He also said if someone stole from his pit or garage, actually stole something, he’d pursue it full tilt. And there you go…I think that’s what most of the guys in NASCAR would say, at least I would hope they would. And they’d like to think that all the folks they employ and entrust with their car upkeep and race preparation are as upstanding as they believe they are. I’d like to think that too, so I’ll join NASCAR in waiting and watching to see what facts actually become provable, and we’ll go from there. I’m not saying I don’t believe that Mr. Roush believes he’s been wronged, I’m just saying I think objectivity needs to come into play, and until ALL the facts surface, there is no way to make a judgment either way. Call me old fashioned, ole’ school, whatever…but stealin’ is stealin’ , whether it’s a quarter off your Grandma’s dresser or a car part from the car next door…it’s wrong. And if this proves to be a legitimate claim, a true theft, well then…NASCAR better step it up and take a stand at that point, or my respect for them will take a serious nose dive.
