Drug Test’s and Questions Posted:0535hrs
By Amy Hair,Senior Columnist,Cup Scene Daily I’ve been watching the bantering going on about the drug testing policies that NASCAR has in place. Some are opposed to the current plan; some are fine with it…me? Glad you asked…
If they had been drug tested on a weekly basis for example, would it have made them paranoid and changed who they hung out with and what they chose to do? Maybe… As some of us parents have experienced, a couple of my adventurous boys tried the usual booze before they were of legal age and an occasional puff of questionable smoke passed through their lips. If drug testing had been on the horizon would it have been a determining factor for them? Sure it would…how embarrassing would it have been to get popped on a drug test that your folks had agreed to have done? Yes, parents can buy the over the counter, website specialty tests now days and give them whenever they want, but what if it had been mandatory for our kids to get tested every time some major event came along? Happy 16th Birthday son…now go on and do your drug test honey…you know the rules, no keys unless you pass the test. You’re going to the beach with a bunch of your buddies? How fun will that be? Just remember to pee in the bottle before you go. Bye and have fun! So what it is we want in NASCAR? The same kind of thing? Test them before they jump in the car? Every time? Once a month? Only on the second Tuesday of every other month? It’s a very tough call. Demanding changes and upgrades on the policy because of one incident that became very public is typical…we see it all the time. Something as simple as a bad intersection wont’ get that red light until someone is killed trying to get across the street. Knee jerk reactions…some are right on the money, some are not. Maybe I’m just naïve, but I choose to believe that those men that climb behind the wheel on Sunday afternoon are pretty much clear of any brain clouding enhancements. Does that mean I don’t think they should be tested? No… Does it mean I think they are above the average fellow on the street in their resistance to temptation? Well…yeah, I do. It’s taken more than a little will power and stamina for these guys to get where they are, so messing it up with drugs is just plain stupid. But as we’ve seen…it does happen. So…what to do…what to do. I’m not sure the reasonable suspicion thing is a good plan, simply because by the time you suspect someone’s on the brink of a nose dive with drugs, it’s been awhile since they got started on that plan, meaning they could have endangered other drivers way before any suspicion was raised. A drug test at the beginning of the season for all? Why not…sounds like a good option. Most of the general public have to pass a drug test now days when they start a job right? So…we just have our boys give it up once a year minimum…then follow that reasonable suspicion plan. Heck, do it twice a year…make that second test a surprise. After all the fussing and wondering, I’m thinking most of our men behind the wheels wouldn’t fuss a bit if you asked them to take a drug test every so often…simply because they’ve nothing to hide. It would apparently help ease the tension that this episode has brought to the surface and perhaps they’d be relieved to see more testing. I’ve got faith in our boys out there…but just like a Mom, you have to be proactive in order to keep your brood safe. So test away NASCAR…the only ones that will fuss are the ones that will get caught.
