So why do you think Hendrick Motor Sports is the team to beat right now? Is it money? Is it the drivers? The team members? The owner? Luck perhaps?
--(Cont'd From Front Page)--
These past few days, I have spent a good bit of time watching all the opinions about the Hendricks’s success fly around the internet. After mulling them over, I sat back and analyzed the people and places I’ve worked for…and looked at my own stats.
What did I come up with? Well, my angle may not be the most popular or the most exciting, but I really think the success of any company lies in its leadership and their ability to not only model success, but live it. I sound like a commercial huh? I know, pretty sickening…but it really is true.
I’ve worked for several bosses in my time. All were talented, all had goals. But not all of them could relate to who they worked with. Some lost sight of the fact that the people that work for them are the ones that got them where they are. And some, very few, made sure that the people that worked for them not only had the same sense of goals, but a sense of pride for where they were headed.
I remember when my son was in first grade, he had a teacher that was, to this day, the best I have had the privilege to meet and watch. She didn’t teach any subjects that were different from other teachers, nor did she bribe the kids with extra recess if they did well. She didn’t cater to their every whim, or unnecessarily punish them when it wasn’t needed. But she had a way about her that drew out the best in each and every student. None of the children were the same, not in skills, nor likes, or dreams. Yet they were all focused on being the best they could be. While the children thought they were trying their hardest for their teacher, she was in fact teaching them to be the best they could be simply so they would learn to demand it of themselves. If I could have, I would have hired her to teach my son through all of his school years.
Hendrick has that same ability to somehow spur people to strive to be the very best they can be, all the time, every step of the way. It’s not something you can learn, it’s something you’re blessed with. Why Mr. Hendrick has been given this ability is not something that we are privy to…but we can see it in the eyes of his team and drivers every time they say his name. Whether you’re a Hendrick fan or not doesn’t really matter at this point. They have something that the other teams are sure can be bought or found if they dig hard enough. I don’t think so.
I’m not saying that other teams won’t pass up the Hendricks team in wins or titles. Racing is as unpredictable as a box of frogs. No matter how the Hendrick teams fare, we will still see that unexplainable “thing” going on around Mr. Hendrick and his crews.
Am I saying that HMS is untouchable, impassable, and unbeatable? No, not at all, just saying that there is something in the heart and soul of Mr. Hendrick that will keep this team operating at their very best, no matter what place they end up in, or where they finish in the race. And that’s something that not every team can say right now.
