Chase has yet to deliver its intended punch

The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format has generated as much or more debate than any facet of NASCAR since it was implemented in 2004. The radical departure it represented from NASCAR's roots was hailed as both a revolutionary move by NASCAR CEO Brian France and a slap in the face to the sport's traditionalists.

But the question hovering over the Chase is whether it's really changed anything on the business side...

10.5: Jimmie Johnson's average finish in 2008, the second consecutive year Johnson won the Cup championship despite not having the best average finish. Carl Edwards at 9.5 had the best average finish, and Jeff Gordon at 7.3 had the best in 2007 (to Johnson's 10.8). Johnson had the best average finish in 2006 when he won his first Cup title, edging second-place Matt Kenseth 9.7 to 9.8.
